There’s no doubt do it yourself or DIY decor projects can save you a ton of money.  But, they can also require a lot of time and effort.

Possibly, the most important lesson I’ve learned from doing DIY home decor projects is that an easy project doesn’t necessarily mean its a quick project.  And, an inexpensive project could require hours of labor.

So is it worth it?

The Benefits of DIY Decor

Saving hundreds of dollars by taking on a few DIY decor projects can have a profound ripple effect on your home decorating budget.

Money saved and knowledge gained while embarking on these little adventures means you can do more in the future.  You’ll be able to add those few little extra details that will make your next dinner party a bit more glamorous.

Or, that patio makeover you’ve been wanting for years is now affordable, when you work a few do it yourself projects into the mix.

Better yet, that simple backyard wedding your sister has been planning won’t be missing a single elegant detail due to budgetary restrictions.

In a way, this type of decor allows you to pay it forward to yourself.

The Best Candidates for DIY Decor

If you’re just getting your feet wet with creating home accents on your own, be selective with your projects.

Creating a complicated pattern or having to string frustratingly small beads together is not where you want to start.  The fact is, certain decor accents lend themselves better to DIY projects than others.

Here are a few to get started.

1. Wreaths

I like to switch up my wreaths every season and I also like to try new styles each year.  But, purchasing four wreaths every year is not something I’m willing to do.

Luckily, I’ve found that wreath making is surprisingly simple.

There are a ton of easy DIY Dollar Tree wreath tutorials on YouTube and Pinterest.  If you’d like to start with something that will most likely take you less than an hour and create a big impact in your entry, try a wreath decor project.

2. Centerpieces

Creating a beautiful centerpiece to decorate your dining table, entry table, or mantle is easy and inexpensive.

Many DIY tutorials I’ve seen on centerpieces involve the use of baskets, crates, and tiered trays to corral together a few select pieces.  These projects can easily be done in under an hour and bring a lot of style to your space.

3. Candle Holders

Whether you’d like to make some glamorous pedestal candle holders or nautical-inspired beach themed hurricane vases, there’s a DIY tutorial for you.

Again, I’ve seen a lot of these done using Dollar Tree items.  A few craft supplies and a little hot glue go a long way these days.

4. Cake Stands

These little gems can be surprisingly expensive at big retailers, but an easy afternoon DIY will greatly reduce the cost.

These tiered trays can be used in a ton of different ways.  Of course, you can place cakes and other food items on them for a party, or they work to display jewelry, perfume, and a variety of other items.

5. Terrariums

This particular type of DIY is extremely popular right now.  Terrariums and succulents have become such a popular decor trend this year that you’ll even find them at high-end retailers.

Luckily, you can get the look for less with a little creativity.

Final Thoughts on DIY Decor

If you’re ready to start your new DIY project remember that perfection is overrated.

Don’t worry if you can see a little glue seeping from a seam.  Just rotate your accent so that part doesn’t face out.  Or, nestle it in with some other decor.

Similarly, if you touched your item before the paint was dry, there’s no need to abandon ship.  Tack on a fun little accent like diamond wrap, tie some nautical rope, or add some other type of accessory to disguise it.

Most of all, have fun creating something unique for your home.
