Are you finally ready to decorate your patio or porch?  When it comes to creating an amazing outdoor space there are a lot of options.  In this post, we’ll look at patio decorating ideas and examine the essentials that are needed to create a true outdoor living room.

Once these elements are present, everything else will fall into place.

Eclectic, resort, farmhouse, or any other interior style you’d like to extend your outdoor space can be done

Colors, textures, shade covers, chimes, windmills, and other outdoor decor accents all fall secondary to these six porch decorating essentials.

Porch and Patio Decorating Ideas & Essentials

Ambient Lighting

Soft illumination is the key when it comes to lighting your porch or patio.  Think string lights, lanterns, and candles.  You don’t need a spotlight that will light up your entire patio and yard.

Stick with just enough lighting so that you’re not stumbling around in the dark.

If your backyard is segmented into different zones (i.e. you have a fire pit in the yard off of the patio) be sure to utilize pathway lighting.

Patio Decorating Ideas – Conversation Seating

A nice comfortable place to hold a conversation or play a game of cards is a must.  Once your outdoor oasis is complete you’ll be anxious to share intimate gatherings with friends and family.  Prepare the space for them as if they were indoors.

Patio Decorating Ideas – Outdoor Dining Rooms

I always look forward to dining alfresco in the spring and summer.  Luckily, when it comes to setting up an outdoor dining space, there are tons of patio decorating ideas to be found.

You can create a full outdoor dining room with a 6 or 8 seater table if you have space.

Or, you can use a traditional bistro set with a small round table and a couple of chairs.  If you’re tight on space and don’t have room for a separate dining area and conversation space, simply combine the two.

Add a coffee table and two taller end tables on either side of your seating area and you’re ready to go.

Decorative Outdoor Rugs

An outdoor rug is a must.  Spare yourself the splinter from worn decking or stubbing your toe on a concrete slab and get an outdoor rug.

There is a sense of warmth and comfort that a rug brings and it will transform an ordinary porch into a true outdoor living space.  It’s also useful when trying to define the space visually.

Outdoor Cushions

While we’re talking about comfort, don’t forget cushions for your benches, sofas, and chairs.  Try to make your outdoors just as comfortable as your indoor living room.

A watertight storage bench is a bonus for storing pillows and blankets.

Potted and Hanging Plants

Add as many plants and flowers as your heart desires.  You’re outdoors after all so bring on the green.

Cascading planters are popular, herb walls, hanging planters, creeping ivy, the options are limitless.

Plants on your patio or porch will give the area a nice richness and add a new layer to your design.  Not to mention, they can help to provide privacy, shade, and a lovely fragrance.
