What Kitchen Colors Are In For 2020?

Choosing a new color for your kitchen is a big deal.  Kitchen remodels are expensive and you’ll want to pick something that will look good now and for years to come.

If you’re thinking about listing your home for sale, your kitchen will be one of the biggest selling features of your home. So it’s understandable that selecting kitchen colors can feel like a high stakes decision.

Safe Color Choices

It’s great to incorporate color in your kitchen but do so with caution.  Earthy or muted colors are a safe bet.  They’re less likely to come off as abrasive or “in your face”.  Bright bold colors are always a passing fad.

If you really want to incorporate them into your kitchen, do so in the form of home accessories or appliances.  For example, choose a purple standing mixer over purple cabinets.

Are There Timeless Kitchen Colors?

The best way to create a timeless kitchen is to stick to mid-toned wood flooring options or natural stone colors.  Feel free to go for white, just be careful of whitewashing the entire kitchen.

Trendy Kitchen Colors For 2020

1. Gray and White

Gray and white kitchens and all gray kitchens are definitely in for 2020.  If you’ve had an all-white kitchen for years and are ready to make a change but don’t want anything drastic, try migrating over to gray.

2. Dark Blue

Classic Blue is the Pantone Color of the Year, so it’s no surprise we’re seeing a lot of blue kitchens.  Although, they’re not exactly classic blue.  They’re more of a muted deep blue or navy.

Do you prefer a dark color but don’t want to go all the way with black?  A deep blue may be right up your alley.

3. Black

Speaking of black, this color is also popping back up in kitchens in 2020.  Not too long ago black and white kitchens were all the rage and the re-surfacing of black in kitchen designs this year is evidence the trend never really went away.

If I had to hypothesize about the re-emergence of black, I’d say its due to the current popularity of the modern industrial style.  Matte black metal combined with chunky wood is a signature of the modern industrial style.

How To Change Your Kitchen Colors

There are two easy methods for changing up the colors in your kitchen without remodeling the entire room.  Unless flow and function are an issue, there’s no need to spend any more than the cost of a bucket of paint or stain to update your kitchen colors.

The first option is to change your background.  The background of your kitchen is your walls and backsplash area.  This is by far the least expensive option.

Appliances and cabinetry will likely be covering the vast majority of your background area in the kitchen, so this makes adjusting the few areas that are exposed easy.

The second option is to change your foreground.  This means your cabinets and possibly your kitchen island if you have one.

If you have a cabinet style you like, then stick with it and just paint your cabinets.  If you don’t particularly like your cabinet fronts, but do like the arrangement of your kitchen, there’s no need to rip out everything.  Just get new doors and hardware for your cabinets and you’re in business.
