If youโve been longing for a revival of rich, luxurious interiors, youโre in luck!ย The Art Deco style has been quietly creeping back and Iโm really excited about it.
For the past 10 years or so, the only glam interior style that weโve really seen is Hollywood Glam.ย And while itโs pretty, that style heavily revolves around light monochrome interiors with reflective metal accents.
If you prefer warm, rich tones, this probably didnโt appeal to you.
But rejoice, the Art Deco style is all about glamour, rich tones, and artistic style.ย Best of all, itโs starting to pop up everywhere making it affordable for the masses.
Hereโs what you need to know about this revived interior style.
What Is Art Deco Style?
In the 1920s and 1930s, the Art Deco style thrived.ย While it originated in France, this style of decor was celebrated in the United States as well with iconic Art Deco buildings like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building in NYC.
Overall, the style was about clean angular silhouettes with an appreciation for artistry and form.ย It was topped off with luxurious ornamentation.ย Wall sconces, chandeliers, and metal table lamps with half-moon shapes are very common.
Shapes
One of the signatures of this style is its angular, geometric shapes.ย Circles, squares, triangles, and rectangle shapes are prevalent throughout Art Deco furniture and decor.
Chevron and zig-zag patterns are also very popular along with the iconic stepped forms and sunburst patterns.
Colors
The colors found in the Art Deco style are often neutral tones like black, gray, and brown with pops of rich color.ย Burnt orange, mustard yellow, and royal blue are frequently used.ย Gold and silver are also commonly found as they bring the luxe factor into this decorating genre.
3 Signs the Art Deco Style Is Back
1. Architectural Digest & Forbes
I mentioned in my post โHow To Stay Ahead of Home Decorating Trendsโ that one of the ways to predict coming trends is to watch for what is featured in magazines.
In December, an article in Architectural Digest predicting the interior trends for 2020 touches on the reemergence of the Art Deco style.ย Referencing an interview with Gemma Riberti from WGSN Lifestyle and Interiors, they sayโฆ
Riberti taps an updated take on the angular geometrics, cutouts, and patterns of Art Decoโshe dubs it โneo-Decoโโfor fresh, sophisticated interiors, combining tropical Miami pastels alongside the more traditional black and gold.
In addition, a post by Julia Brenner on Forbes in March of 2020 discusses why Art Deco is forever on-trend.
2. Mass Retail of Art Deco Style Decor
Decorative accents in this style are popping up everywhere.ย In addition to its influence on the new MoDRN Neo Luxury decor line at Walmart, it can be found from brands like Project 62 and Flower Home.
Thereโs a nice selection of Art Deco decor on the At Home website as well.ย They have mirrors, vases, coasters, and bowls in this style.ย Many of the pieces feature gold and rich blue tones.
3. Search Trends
At the time Iโm writing this post, searches for the phrase โwhat is art deco styleโ are up 450% on Google.ย Searches for โart deco wallpaperโ and โart deco bathroomโ are also up on Pinterest.
This is a clear indication that there is a renewed interest in understanding the style.
