Itโ€™s a new year filled with new opportunities to score great deals on home decor.ย  Each month of the year brings with it a new group of items that are priced at their absolute lowest.ย  The tricky part is knowing whatโ€™s on sale and when.ย  Today, letโ€™s talk about what to buy for your home in January to save money.

Decorating On A Budget

Decorating on a budget can be tricky.ย  We want to spend as little as possible, but also make our spaces beautiful, current, and classy.

The problem is, even if you donโ€™t spend a lot of money on individual home accents, the sheer number of things needed to create a well-appointed home can set you off-budget.

Letโ€™s take a bedroom for example.ย  You may want an area rug, window treatments, furniture, bedding, pillows, wall decor, tabletop accents, and lamps to complete your room.ย  Thatโ€™s a lot!

And thatโ€™s just one room!ย  This is why the best way to decorate a home on a budget is to do it over time.

If you dedicate a small amount each month to curating items for your home and buy only whatโ€™s on sale during those months you can make out like a bandit.

What To Buy For Your Home In January

1. Buy Home Fragrances

Sure, we can debate whether or not candles and scented wall-plugs are actually decor.

But thereโ€™s one thing that isnโ€™t up for debate.ย  That is the importance of a fresh-smelling home.

Iโ€™m a big advocate for opening at least a few windows in your home each day.ย  But, sometimes this isnโ€™t possible.ย  And, sometimes you just want an extra special fragrance drifting through your room.

This month you can save a ton on home fragrances.ย  The Yankee Candle Semi-Annual Sale, as well as the Bath & Body Works Semi-Annual Sale, are happening right now.

2. Look Out For Thrift Store Gems

You know the saying, โ€œone manโ€™s trash is another manโ€™s treasureโ€.ย  And, oh the treasure you can find at the thrift store in January.

The combination of people decluttering after Christmas and the โ€œNew Year, New Meโ€ attitude creates an influx of thrift store inventory.

Yes, thrifting is a bit time consuming, but you can find some amazing things this time of year.ย  Focus on items that would have been gifted, like artwork, tabletop decor, serving sets, and candle holders.

Goodwill is always a destination for me during this time of year.ย  And, Iโ€™m only speculating here, but I suspect that GoodWill has seen the success of ThredUp and is about to make some major changes in the way you shop their stores.

I havenโ€™t heard anyone talking about it, but you can actually shop GoodWill online.ย  Currently, their online shopping portal looks like a sad version of eBay where you can bid on items.ย  But, I suspect that will be much improved in the coming years.

If you want to check it out, go to shopgoodwill.com.

Also, donโ€™t forget to look for the Goodwill Boutiques for higher-end finds.

3. Scoop Up Christmas Decor

Prices on Christmas decorations are at their lowest in January.ย  Be fast about grabbing those deals.ย  After the second or third week of the month, the Christmas clearance will be moved off the shelves.

Youโ€™ll find everything related to the holiday marked down, but the things you should target are high ticket items like Christmas trees, outdoor lighted decor, large tree ornaments, and wreaths.

Michaelโ€™s is currently featuring up to 70% off select items on their website with their Mega Clearance Event.ย  The vast majority of their clearance items are holiday decor and the prices are amazing.

Youโ€™ll find plate chargers for $1, decorative sprays for $4, and ribbons and ornaments less than $1!

This is one of the best places to shops for clearance holiday decor, in my opinion.ย  But you have to act fast.ย  This stuff will disappear in the blink of an eye.

4. Shop White Sales

Although white sales are traditionally for bedding, like sheets, duvets, pillows, etc., youโ€™ll also find markdowns on home decor.

Look for towels, rugs, home accents, and even furniture on sale alongside bedding at places like Macyโ€™s, West Elm, Kohls,ย Wayfair, and Pottery Barn.

Donโ€™t be fooled by a name change.ย  Not everyone calls their white sale a โ€œWhite Saleโ€.ย  For example, Pottery Barn is having a โ€œThe Big Refreshโ€ right now with up to 20% off bed and bath.ย  Macyโ€™s is having a โ€œBedding and Basics Saleโ€ with up to 50% off.

So, browse around.ย  Youโ€™ll likely find some deep discounts throughout January at home and department stores.
