Low budget decorating ideas are in high demand, and for good reason.  Many people consider home decor a luxury. Others don’t see the value in having anything beyond the basics.

However, if you enjoy the look and feel of a well-appointed home, you’ve no doubt noticed that some of this stuff can be expensive.

Artisan vases can run upwards of two hundred dollars from some retailers. Artwork for your walls can get very pricey as well.  Particularly, if you’re looking for original artwork.

So, how can you decorate your home without paying a fortune?  Here are some budget decorating tips if you’re working with a small budget, or no budget at all.

5 Low Budget Decorating Ideas

1. Pair the Old with The New

Don’t buy everything brand new.

Create a “new look” by pairing an item you’ve owned for years with a new addition.  It will give the old item a fresh feeling.

Try adding a new marble or glass tray beneath an old vase or candleholder you’ve had since college.  Mixing and matching in this way is a great way to save money.

2. DIY (Do It Yourself)

If you’re wondering if DIY decor projects are really worth your time, check out our post here.

If you’ve already read that post, you know there are several easy ways to approach a DIY decor project and have amazing results.  Save your hard-earned money and create something yourself from inexpensive pieces you can find at the Dollar Tree.

3. Remix Rooms

Another great way to decorate on a budget is to simply rearrange the items you already own.

You can either identify pieces you’re not sure are working well in a certain space and try them in another room.  Or, for a full refresh, take a day to fully remove all decor pieces from each room and lay them all out together in one area.

Then, begin to shop your stash.  Go room by room and start redesigning. Try to give visibility to items that may not have been in the spotlight before.

For instance, give those candleholders or artificial flowers you’ve been keeping on your vanity for years a new life on your kitchen counter.

Or, repurpose chargers you’ve been using on your dining room table into trays on your nightstands to corral your phone, jewelry, or other small items.

4. Second-Hand Treasures

Visit the Goodwill, Craigslist, Offer Up, Habitat for Humanity Restore or other consignment shops to get a great deal on second-hand pieces.  You’d be surprised at what you can get for under $5 at the Goodwill on the right day.

5. Swap

Much like a clothing swap, you can get together with friends and family for a decor swap.  Everyone can bring 3 to 5 pieces they’re no longer in love with and trade with someone else to score some “new” items with which to decorate your home.
