Hi, it's Lindsay Dianne from DianneDecor.com

In this video we're going to talk all about what to put in large glass jars for decoration
0:11
Oversized jars and vessels are a fantastic way to decorate your countertops, whether
0:17
it is your kitchen counter or a console table by your entryway or in your living room or
0:23
even your coffee table. But there are so many options that people just underutilize
0:31
You can go so far beyond just grasses and moss and rocks and we're going to talk all
0:36
about the different things that you can use to fill your glass jars for decoration in
0:41
this video. Let's get started. The first thing that you can use to fill your glass jars for decoration is dry organic materials
0:52
Now this is the thing that we most commonly see. So we're talking about little pebbles, river rocks, sand, moss, grasses, seashells, things
1:04
like that. You can really use these to not only prop up some faux flowers and give them sort of
1:11
a sturdy base to sit in, or you can not do faux florals at all and just fill it up with
1:18
this dry organic material. They have lots of great kind of earth tone mixes that generally meld with everything
1:27
which is why so many people use them. You know, green in general is kind of a neutral in your home when you're talking about moss
1:34
or grass. Sand, whether it's white or beige, similarly with the rocks, whether they're white or beige
1:41
or gray, tend to go with just about everything. So you really can't go wrong with dry organic material
1:48
Number two is decorative objects and potpourri. Now this is where you can start to get into something a little bit more structural, like
1:57
balls of twine or wood chips or even the bags of potpourri that you may have wood chips
2:05
and pine cones and a lot of different things mixed into them
2:09
This is again, usually some sort of a dry organic material, like a grass that has been
2:15
dried or a twine or some kind of rattan piece, but anything like that that is formed into
2:23
a shape is really beautiful when sort of stacked on one another inside of one of these large
2:29
oversized vessels. So if you don't want to mess with sand and you don't want to mess with rocks, think about
2:36
filling it with a lighter, more structural object and fill it up to the top, fill it
2:42
halfway, color coordinate it with some of your other items in your home, like those
2:48
balls of twine. You can find them in a lot of different colors, especially at Hobby Lobby, or you can spray
2:53
paint them to match your other decor on your tabletop or within your centerpiece
3:01
The other types of objects that you shouldn't overlook are collectible items
3:06
So things like buttons, antique keys, I've even seen pool balls, like pool cues, the
3:15
balls with the little numbers on them, I've seen those in oversized jars on a display
3:20
and they look so cool. So think about some of the little trinkets that you may like to collect and add them
3:26
to a glass jar as a way to display them. It's a really creative way to personalize your home decor and make it unique to your space
3:37
Something that is special to you, put it on display in a glass jar if you can
3:44
Game pieces are another option for a glass jar. Think of Scrabble letters or possibly even Monopoly silver, the old school silver figurines
3:57
for the Monopoly games. A collection of those would look really cool in a glass jar
4:03
Spools of thread is another thing that would look really cool in an oversized glass jar
4:09
Number three is a submerged floral display. Now these are a little bit trickier to pull off, but they can be done
4:17
So what you're going to want to do is you either want to find a way to weigh down your
4:24
floral display or you can sort of hot glue it to a base or hot glue the pieces down to
4:31
the base of your jar. Fill it with something to cover that, so it may be some beads or jewels or something like that
4:40
And then you're going to fill it to the top with water. You could also use that faux acrylic water if you'd like as well, so that you don't have
4:48
to worry about having fresh water splashing all over the place. I think this is actually a better option if you want to keep that display out long term
4:57
If you want to set it up for something special like a dinner party, I'd just go ahead and use regular water
5:02
But if you want to leave it out there for an extended period of time, you know, for
5:06
months and months at a time, you don't want to have to worry about a whole giant jar of
5:11
water sitting on a counter. Moreover, a lot of the faux florals of course have wire inside of them and you may find
5:18
yourself in a situation where that stuff begins to rust in the water
5:22
So it's better to use that faux acrylic water if you want a long term display
5:27
But if you want something just for a party, use regular water, make sure your florals
5:32
are weighed down at the bottom and it's a fantastic way to fill a jar
5:37
The fourth thing that you can use to fill large glass jars for decoration are crafting materials
5:44
So think about beads, sequins, balls of yarn, things like that that you find in the crafting aisle
5:53
You could even do crayons or crayon pieces or, I don't know that I would necessarily
5:59
do pom-poms unless it was for maybe a kid's arrangement, you could do that
6:04
But just think about all those little crafting materials that there are out there
6:08
They are great and inexpensive usually to use to fill a large glass jar for decoration
6:16
Just remember that the smaller your item is, the more you're going to need of it
6:20
So if we're talking about buttons and you have a 12 inch jar with a 9 inch wide sort
6:27
of opening and you're filling all of that with buttons, that's a lot of buttons
6:32
So just keep that in mind if you're thinking about using craft items to fill a jar because
6:38
a lot of those things tend to be a little bit smaller. But if you're thinking about balls of yarn or even clothespins, those would be really
6:48
great and inexpensive to fill up a glass jar and create a beautiful display as well as
6:55
creating some storage, practical storage for you if these are objects that you use all
7:00
the time. Next up is plant material. So besides mosses and grasses, think about other plant materials that you can use to
7:10
fill a large jar. Things like pine cones, acorns, leaves, all of these are really great options
7:20
Succulents are also a perfect plant-based option whether they're real or fake for a
7:27
large glass jar. In fact, I saw on Amazon just the other day a huge bag of faux succulents that were intended
7:34
to be used as jar filler. So think about combining some of these things together
7:40
So let's say you have a layer of sand and then you have a layer of stones and then you
7:46
have your succulents on top. It would create a really beautiful layered display and it's inexpensive
7:56
It will fill up a space because it's better to have one large display than have 10 little
8:02
tiny trinkets that you got from Dollar Tree, right? It's a much more upscale, upgraded look to have a large vessel filled with something
8:12
than a bunch of tiny little things. So if you are into collecting the tiny little things, think about putting them in a glass jar
8:20
Last but not least is food. Food is an awesome option to fill a glass jar
8:29
So this is usually seen when you're looking for kitchen decor, but a giant vase filled
8:35
with lemons or limes or any other dry good like pasta, rice, dry beans, corn kernels
8:46
like popcorn kernels. All those things can, again, just like the crafting materials, they can do double duty
8:52
They can be completely functional and you can have them on display in these large glass
8:58
jars or you can just have it purely decorative. Again, if this, much like the submerged flower situation, if you want this out for a long
9:08
time and you don't want to have to worry about perishable items, go for the faux lemons
9:13
go for the faux limes. You can find them everywhere. Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Walmart, Amazon, they're plentiful
9:22
So think about things like that that are in the food category to use to fill some of
9:27
your large glass jars for decoration. That's it for this video. I hope you found it helpful
