Hi, it's Lindsay Diane from dianedecor.com
0:05
In today's video, I'm going to share with you some expert tips for finding the best
0:10
faux florals online. When it comes to shopping online, finding faux florals or artificial flowers is one
0:18
of the hardest home decor items to track down. Not because there's not a lot of them, but because it's very, very hard to determine
0:26
the quality of the item online. It's just one of those things that it's easier for you to be able to pick up and feel and
0:34
see in person. But you can get some really, really amazing deals online if you follow a few tips every
0:42
time you shop. The very first thing that you want to check when you're shopping for faux florals online
0:56
are the materials. The materials will tell you so much about the quality of the item that you're about
1:02
to receive. The first thing that you want to avoid in your materials is polyethylene
1:09
Now polyethylene, it can be done well, it can look flawless, but a lot of the times
1:15
when you're getting really, really inexpensive faux florals, it's done cheaply and fast
1:21
And I'm going to show you what I mean. Polyethylene is like, you know, it's like a plastic, right
1:28
It comes in the little pellets, they melt it down, you would pour it into a mold
1:33
For sure you want to avoid faux florals that are completely made of polyethylene
1:39
They have no fabric to them at all. I see this a lot with certain types of flowers, like lavender stems sometimes, sometimes I
1:48
see them and they're completely plastic. You don't want that. Instead, go for something that's a mix
1:55
But what I'm talking about when I say they can look cheap is, I'll try to put some pictures
2:02
up here online, but you can see a lot of the little fraying here from the cut of the plastic
2:10
So I'm talking about this light little pale piece here. And you can also see how cheap it looks where it connects to the stem, right
2:20
It looks so fake. So try to avoid stuff like that. Instead, look for it being very well done
2:30
For example, this is still going to be a plastic stem, but it's done so much better
2:37
It's beautiful. It looks very realistic. This is like an orchid stem
2:41
I got this from Hobby Lobby like 10-12 years ago, and they're still holding up beautifully
2:49
That leads me to the next thing, which is when it comes to the fabric, you want silk
2:55
You do not want polyester. With the polyester, let me see if I can get close here for you
3:01
Let's see. A good spot. Okay. So if we can focus in there
3:09
All right. You see all the fraying? You see the fraying here
3:14
There's more up over here. This is what you get with cheap polyester flowers
3:21
They are not woven tightly. They are thin and see-through, and they will just fray and pull apart
3:29
A lot of times, you'll see them fraying before you even leave the store
3:32
They're on the shelves looking like that. So imagine what they're going to look like years and years down the line after you've
3:40
used them, packed them away, pulled them back out again. They're going to fray terribly
3:45
So instead of polyester, look for something that is made out of silk for the leaves or
3:50
for the petals. This is another beautiful option where you have silk
3:58
Another option that you want to look for instead of the polyethylene and silk is latex and foam
4:07
Latex and foam is the thing that you're going to get most often when they say real touch
4:11
real feel. This is so soft. It's lovely. It's smooth. It's cut to precision
4:22
I mean, you can barely tell the difference between this and a real leaf
4:26
And then the top is like a foam. The actual tulip head is like a little foamy piece
4:34
It's gorgeous. And again, this is not much more expensive than this
4:41
You just have to read the description and know what you're getting. If you can, skip polyethylene, skip polyester
4:49
Instead go for latex or silk or polyethylene and silk
5:00
Let's move on to the second thing that you should look for when you're shopping online
5:05
for artificial flowers. And that is the quantity. Most often people are upset in the comments and in the reviews of a product listing because
5:16
of the quantity. You want to check the quantity in the product description
5:23
Often people just look at the product photos and in the product photos, they may be using
5:29
more than what they're actually selling, right? Because they wanted to make it look full and big and beautiful
5:35
You may be getting a pack of three stems, but in the product photo, they're using three
5:40
packs of three stems, which means it's a total of nine stems that you need and not just three
5:46
Make sure that you look at how many stems you're getting and how many heads per stem
5:53
you're getting. The average is like four to six heads per stem
5:58
If you get more than that, then you're getting a really great deal. So you're counting each flower head
6:04
So I've got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. I've actually got eight heads per stem here, which is really great
6:14
And this would be beautiful if it wasn't for all of the fraying on the polyester
6:26
Moving on to number three, you want to check for filler flowers
6:29
Now this happens when you are looking at something that is a mixed bouquet
6:35
So I'm going to show you an example of something that I found on Amazon
6:39
Here you see this is a bouquet that's saying it's peony and hydrangea
6:45
If you are targeting this item for the peonies, you are going to be really disappointed because
6:52
if you take a really close look at the product photo that they've shown you of one stem
6:58
it says these are the details for one pack. We're offering three packs
7:02
So basically you get three stems. But if you look close, there's only two peonies
7:08
There's only two peony heads in this whole thing. The rest of them are hydrangeas of varying sizes and what looks like a pom pom mum
7:19
It seems like there's some baby breath in there. So this is a very mixed bag
7:23
So if you're buying this thinking I'm going to snip the peonies off and I'm going to use
7:27
it in a wreath or I just want the peony and a hydrangea and I want to use it in a wreath
7:31
really take a close look at that bouquet if you're getting a mixed bouquet like this
7:37
The way that you would want to approach a listing like this is decide how many heads
7:43
of one particular item you want. If you don't care and you just love the bouquet as it is, then that's fine
7:49
Don't worry about it. But if you are really targeting it for one particular flower because it seems like it's
7:54
a good deal, really do the math on it because it might not make sense
8:00
So with this, if I really wanted it for the peony, in the end I'm only getting six, right
8:07
But I could go to a listing like this instead and get a bouquet that is all peony and no
8:14
fill of flowers at all and get 14 heads for only four dollars more
8:20
That's a much better deal if that's what I'm targeting. So keep in mind the fill of flowers and whether or not you really want those in your display
8:32
Number four is to check the dimensions. So that is going to be the length and the spread of your spray
8:41
Again, using this as an example, you want to check how long is it
8:46
Usually the longer it is, the more expensive it's going to be. You want to know how far your spread is because that's going to determine how far out you're
8:55
able to fan out this stem within your vase or vessel. So make sure you check that
9:03
Again, that's one of those things that you see in the description. It doesn't look as full as I thought it did
9:07
Well, maybe that's because, you know, it really doesn't spread out far
9:12
Maybe the spread is the dimension is this, but you want it to be this
9:16
You have to really take a close look and check that description to see the overall dimensions of your item
9:25
Now, of course, if you get a stem that's longer than you need or shorter than you need, there are hacks to fix that
9:31
Right. If you get a stem that's too short for your vase, you can put some filler in the bottom of the vase
9:36
You can stuff paper in there. You can do the floral foam pieces to kind of raise it up in your vase
9:42
Or if you have, you know, as long as you have an opaque vessel, if your stem is too long, you can bend it over, tuck it in
9:51
No one's the wiser. But if you're using something like a glass vessel, you're not going to be able to use those hacks because everybody's going to see through it
9:58
So make sure you get the right length so you don't have to go and cut and waste money, basically
10:04
Last but not least, of course, you want to check the reviews on Amazon
10:09
They have been highlighting items that are frequently returned. Keep a lookout for that
10:16
See if people are returning it because it's not what they think it is
10:20
It may be because the product page is just a little bit deceiving
10:26
And really, a lot of the times is that people are just looking at the pictures and they fall in love with the pictures that they're showing, but they're not really reading the description
10:34
Going back to the example of the bouquet, you see that this is a frequently returned item that you really want to look for
10:43
What are the customers saying that have actually purchased this item? And look at their photos
10:49
More than you look at the product photos, you want to look at the photos from the people that actually have it in their house
10:55
So you can see here the top positive review and the top critical review are telling you the same thing
11:03
They're both telling you that you need multiple packs of these to give it a nice full look
11:09
And I can see how that is, because if you look at the product photos and take a really critical look at the pictures, you can see that the vase that you're showing where it looks like they really are overflowing
11:23
These vases are teeny, teeny tiny. They're teeny tiny. Look at the things that are in the background
11:28
You can see the book. You can see the picture frame. And that will give you some sense of the scale of the vase that they're showing you
11:36
And you can tell, yeah, one bouquet might look like that in a vase that's maybe this tall like this, because that's really what you're looking at
11:44
You're looking at like a four inch or a six inch vase
11:48
And of course, it's going to look big and overflowing. But most people don't have vases that size, right
11:53
Most people would have a vase that's more like 11 or 12 inches
11:56
And so you're going to need multiple bundles to make it look really full
12:01
So be sure to check the reviews. That's it for this video
