shop, helps me find like-minded people online, and is an amazing creative outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Blogging also came with a lot of learning on the job.\u00a0 Frankly, a lot more than I ever expected.<\/p>\n<p>For the past 10 years, I&#8217;ve been running my web design business from home.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen and built a lot of different types of websites and blogs for clients.<\/p>\n<p>So, when I decided to pivot from web design into running my e-commerce website it was easy.\u00a0 I knew exactly what I was doing, I didn&#8217;t need to hire out any help, and was was up and running but no one knew I existed.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, all of my sales were being generated through eBay, Bonanza, and other online marketplaces because that&#8217;s where the traffic was.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, those sites take a hefty commission each time you generate a sale on their platform.\u00a0 Relying solely on those sites for sales was eating into my profits in a major way.<\/p>\n<p>I needed to solve this problem and increase profits.\u00a0 So, I decided to start a blog to drive more organic traffic to my e-commerce shop.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62241\" accessories.\u00a0 I love everything about interior decorating, design, and architecture.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always dabbled in DIY projects and having recently moved into our first home, I felt that the stars had aligned for me to share my journey decorating our new home on a budget.<\/p>\n<p>Blogging not only spared my mom from endless conversations about pillow covers and curtain selections but involved in creating posts online!?\u00a0 I sure didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>But now, after countless early morning and many, many late nights, I&#8217;ve finally found my footing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In this post, I&#8217;m going to share my experience in all facets of blogging from tone and authenticity to worries about competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I will also lay out a basic framework for how to need a domain name and hosting account.\u00a0 Being a website developer and administrator for the past 10 years, I have strong opinions on how to complete this step.<\/p>\n<p>First, I never buy my domain names and hosting accounts with the same company.\u00a0 If you have issues with your hosting service, such as reliability or speed, you want to be able to move your website easily and without issue.<\/p>\n<p>If your domain registration is bundled up in with your hosting service this will create a more involved and technical process when you try to move to another company.\u00a0 To avoid this issue altogether, I always buy my domain names from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.godaddy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">GoDaddy<\/span><\/a><\/strong> and my website hosting services from <a href=\"https:\/\/partners.hostgator.com\/o3aYO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>HostGato<\/strong>r<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of other good hosting services out there as well, like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluehost.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bluehost<\/span><\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inmotionhosting.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">InMotionHosting<\/span><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 accounts, you&#8217;re going to &#8220;point your domain&#8221;.\u00a0 To do this you&#8217;ll need your name servers.\u00a0 HostGator or whichever hosting company you choose will tell you what they are as soon as you register your account.<\/p>\n<p>They are usually included in a welcome email or on your hosting control panel homepage.<a href=\"https:\/\/partners.hostgator.com\/o3aYO\" &#8220;coming soon&#8221; or &#8220;under construction&#8221; page until you load your software and build your actual website.<\/p>\n<p>To build your site I highly recommend using WordPress.\u00a0 This is a one-click install from your hosting control panel.\u00a0 It will walk you through the setup step by step.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve ever installed a program onto your PC, you can install WordPress on your own using the Cpanel.<\/p>\n<p>Once your software is set up, you&#8217;re live. You can fiddle around with themes, layouts, and logos.\u00a0 But frankly, none of that matters if you don&#8217;t have content.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s best if you focus on what your blog is all about before getting caught up in the aesthetics.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Choosing_Your_Home_Decorating_Blog_Niche\"><\/span>Choosing Your Home Decorating Blog Niche<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are so many different avenues and specialized areas under the home decorating category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deciding what you want to write about and how you intend to write is important.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are you creating an instructional blog where you&#8217;ll be sharing how-to guides?\u00a0 Or, are you going to talk about high-end decor and review products?\u00a0 Will you share DIY projects, home tours, offer an in-depth exploration into decorating trends, or just post decorating inspiration?\u00a0 Do you only want to blog about farmhouse decor or modern industrial styles?<\/p>\n<p>There truly are hundreds of different directions to take your blog in when it comes to home decorating.<\/p>\n<p>You can opt for a single topic blog or a multi-topic format.\u00a0 I recommend choosing a few areas to start out with and refine later on.<\/p>\n<p>If 2 months from now you realize you hate putting together home tour posts or creating DIY tutorials, that&#8217;s fine.\u00a0 Focus instead on the types of posts you enjoy and the ones that flow easily when you&#8217;re writing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also, don&#8217;t forget your adjacent niches.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Home decorating, party planning, home entertaining, and organization usually go hand in hand.<\/p>\n<p>So, having a blog that is predominantly focused on home decorating does not mean you can&#8217;t write about other similar topics.\u00a0 Just avoid being a catch-all blog that talks about decorating one week and auto maintenance the next.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Your_Blog_First_Post\"><\/span>Your Blog First Post<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The first thing you need to do is to after setting up your website and choosing your niche is to start posting.\u00a0 This seems like a no-brainer, but it&#8217;s a hard step.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll be anxious, excited, fearful, and maybe even a little embarrassed.\u00a0 But, <strong>just post something<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t have to be perfect, and frankly, it probably won&#8217;t even be good.\u00a0 The structure of a good, effective blog post is a moving target.<\/p>\n<p>Blogging styles that worked 10 years ago don&#8217;t work today.<\/p>\n<p>You also won&#8217;t have developed the skill set needed to create a flawless post, and that&#8217;s okay.\u00a0 No one did when they were starting.\u00a0 Just post.\u00a0 Write about something you&#8217;re excited and passionate about, check it for spelling and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/grammerly.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">grammar<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, add a nice photo that helps support your text, and publish.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Overcoming_Fear\"><\/span>Overcoming Fear<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You&#8217;ll have all the time in the world to critique your work after you post.\u00a0 You can always go back and edit, but <strong>the most important hurdle to get over is the fear of hitting the publish button<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The funny thing is, we all have this crippling fear that our first post is going to be terrible and so poorly received that our blogging careers are over before they start.<\/p>\n<p>But, the reality is, no one is even going to see that post.\u00a0 Until you promote it or share the link, you&#8217;re just an unknown blog floating out there on the web.<\/p>\n<p>Your search ranking is probably in the millions and barely anyone browses past the first 10 search results on Google.<\/p>\n<p>But, as you continue to post you will gain confidence in yourself and your ability.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll begin to write content that you&#8217;re proud of and will want to share it.<\/p>\n<p>And, once that happens, you know you&#8217;re in the groove and are becoming a true blogger.\u00a0 Also, as you build a catalog of quality content on your website, your domain authority will improve and you&#8217;ll be more likely to be found.<\/p>\n<p>But, 1 or 2 or 20 blog posts aren&#8217;t going to do it.\u00a0 So, get writing!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" has been a challenge for me.\u00a0 I&#8217;m a naturally introverted, private, person who doesn&#8217;t love the idea of strangers knowing intimate details about my life.<\/p>\n<p>But, blogging is personal.\u00a0 The best bloggers forge a connection with their readers because of their authenticity and their ability to share.<\/p>\n<p>We connect with people through shared experiences.\u00a0 And if you don&#8217;t share your experiences and the details that helped shape your perspective, it&#8217;s hard for others to become invested in you and your work.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62247\" pepper in some details of your life into your blog posts.\u00a0 Let your audience know who you are and what you&#8217;re all about.<\/p>\n<p>We want to make sure our blogging is more of a conversation than a lecture.\u00a0 This type of authentic writing will take you so much further than strategically placed keywords ever will.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Blogging_Consistently\"><\/span>Blogging Consistently<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is another hard one for me, I&#8217;ll admit.\u00a0 Posting consistently is important when it comes to developing and maintaining a following for your blog.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, but it affects your website ranking within search engines.\u00a0 The frequency of your posts also plays a role in social media algorithms that decide whether or not your content should be recommended to others on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You don&#8217;t have to create a firm schedule, but you do have to be consistent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A great resource is a book called: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Master-Content-Strategy-Maximize-Publish\/dp\/B07KFP387L\/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=&amp;sr=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Master Content Strategy: How to Maximize Your Reach and Boost Your Bottom Line Every Time You Hit Publish<\/strong><\/span><\/a> by Pamela Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>In this book, the author teaches you how to approach your blog in a lifecycle approach.\u00a0 It breaks down what you should be doing and how often you should be posting depending on how old your blog is.<\/p>\n<p>So year 1 is all about building your catalog of content, year 2 &#8211; 5 you&#8217;re focusing on more in-depth work that consists of longer post infused with other rich media.<\/p>\n<p>She has other recommendations for year 6 and beyond along with how to help your older content get discovered after you&#8217;ve been blogging for a time.<\/p>\n<p>Her method of forward-linking and backlinking within related posts is great as well.\u00a0 It was the perfect thing to listen to as an audiobook while I was busy cooking, cleaning, or driving.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"My_First_Year_Blogging\"><\/span>My First Year Blogging<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When I first started I was posting 3 &#8211; 5 times per week.\u00a0 Then, exhaustion set in.\u00a0 I had a newborn at home with me full-time.\u00a0 And while I thought it would be a piece of cake to write a new piece of content Monday &#8211; Friday, the reality was anything but easy.<\/p>\n<p>What I had neglected to factor in was writing on 3 hours sleep, being interrupted every 15 minutes, having to stop to make baby food, dinner, clean the house, etc.<\/p>\n<p>I also needed to get my client web design work done, maintain my online shop, research upcoming blog topics, do keyword research, and all of the after-work that comes with written content.<\/p>\n<p>That includes finding images, formatting images, creating Pinterest pins, creating tweets for Twitter, categorizing your content, adding searchable tags, adding SEO meta titles and descriptions, and the list goes on and on.<\/p>\n<p>What I would later learn is that I was approaching this workload all wrong.<\/p>\n<p>But, until I learned this, my posting consistency would ebb and flow drastically.\u00a0 I was able to post 5 days a week for about 3 weeks, then I would drop back to 2 or 3 posts per week, then I&#8217;d go almost a month with no post.\u00a0 I was all over the place.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite all of that inconsistency, my passion and enthusiasm never waned.\u00a0 By the end of my first year, I was surprised to find I&#8217;d written 116 posts.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finding_Advice_for_New_Content_Creators\"><\/span>Finding Advice for New Content Creators<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After battling inconsistency problems for about a year I started searching for help.\u00a0 I wanted to be better and do better, but I didn&#8217;t know how to manage the workload of 5 people by myself.<\/p>\n<p>I was and still am a one-woman show; meaning I write all of my content, take all of my photos, do all of my post research, create all of my graphics, and do all of my social media promotions solo.<\/p>\n<p>So, I started listening to small business and productivity podcasts like Jenna Kutcher&#8217;s &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/goaldiggerpodcast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Goal Digger Podcast<\/span><\/a><\/strong>&#8221; and Jeff Sanders&#8217; &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffsanders.com\/the-5-am-miracle-podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">5 am\u00a0Miracle Podcast<\/span><\/a><\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Very quickly,\u00a0 <strong>I discovered a pattern in the advice given to content creators.\u00a0 It is batching.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s akin to block scheduling in school.\u00a0 For a set amount of time, you focus on one task and one task only.\u00a0 For instance, at its most basic level, to write a blog post I need to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Come up with a topic and research keywords<\/li>\n<li>Draft the post<\/li>\n<li>Edit the post<\/li>\n<li>Find imagery<\/li>\n<li>Format imagery<\/li>\n<li>Create a pin for Pinterest.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I need to complete those 6 steps to get me from zero to published.<\/p>\n<p>What I used to do was run through each of those steps from 1 &#8211; 6 each time I wanted to post something to my blog.\u00a0 It was incredibly inefficient.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Start_Batching_Your_Blog_Posts\"><\/span>How to Start Batching Your Blog Posts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To complete a blog post in that manner I had to switch gears so many times.<\/p>\n<p>First I&#8217;d start with a topic idea, then I&#8217;d go to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ads.google.com\/home\/tools\/keyword-planner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Google Keyword Planner<\/span><\/a><\/strong> to research the right keywords.\u00a0 Then I&#8217;d go to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/answerthepublic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Answer the Public<\/span><\/a><\/strong> to figure out what verbiage people were using to search for this topic.<\/p>\n<p>Next, I would go into WordPress to draft, proofread, assign tags, categories, create affiliate links, and write SEO metadata.<\/p>\n<p>Then, I&#8217;d look for imagery on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Unsplash<\/span><\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/pixabay.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pixabay<\/span><\/a><\/strong> if I didn&#8217;t have original photography to go along with the post.\u00a0 Then I&#8217;d drag that image into Photoshop to resize it.\u00a0 Next, a featured image for the post needs to be created.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I&#8217;d create a Pinterest graphic to share in my Tailwind Tribe (more on Tailwind below).\u00a0 That&#8217;s a lot of jumping around between different applications.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a reason why the assembly line works so well.\u00a0 Focusing on a singular task repeatedly allows you to generate results much faster.<\/p>\n<p>So instead of doing task 1, then 2, then 3, then 4, etc.\u00a0 I decide how many posts I want to create (let&#8217;s say 6).\u00a0 I then spend 1 day researching all 6 posts, then I&#8217;ll spend a couple of days generating drafts for all 6 posts, then edit all the posts, and so on and so on.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the process, I have 6 fully completed blog posts, ready and waiting to be published.<\/p>\n<p>This is by far the most efficient and least stressful way to maintain a blog and post consistently.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;d like to shift to the topic of other bloggers.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s talk about peers, competitors, and blogging communities.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Competition_and_Your_Peers\"><\/span>Competition and Your Peers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A question that will likely cross your mind when you first start blogging is: <strong>should I be worried about competition from other bloggers?<\/strong>\u00a0 The answer is: Absolutely not.<\/p>\n<p>Other bloggers are not your competition, they are your peers.\u00a0 Put competition out of your mind.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-62378\" src=\"https:\/\/diannedecor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/peers.png\" alt=\"Following Instagram Hashtags for Your Niche\" width=\"600\" height=\"543\" already other bloggers writing about the same topic.\u00a0 Could I compete?<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ve been writing for 6 years and have 70k followers on Instagram.\u00a0 Why would someone want to read my post about &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/diannedecor.com\/blog\/interior-design-trends\/whats-your-home-decor-style-part-i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What&#8217;s Your Home Decor Style?<\/span><\/a><\/strong>&#8220;, when the topic has already been covered by a bigger blogger.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, worries about competition and redundancy are inconsequential.\u00a0 Just because someone else has posted a tutorial on how to decorate a Christmas tree doesn&#8217;t mean you shouldn&#8217;t do it as well.<\/p>\n<p>We all have unique perspectives shaped by our experiences.\u00a0 My take on the subject matter will be different than yours.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, your voice and personality are really what draw people into reading your posts.\u00a0 This goes back to the &#8220;getting personal&#8221; thing.\u00a0 Your readers will connect with you as a person and want to hear your opinion.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Tackle_Redundancy_In_Your_Niche\"><\/span>How to Tackle Redundancy In Your Niche<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Something to keep in mind as well is that <strong>there will always be a new influx of information seekers<\/strong>.\u00a0 When it comes to home decorating, there will always be a new 18 or 20-year-old young adult that has just signed the lease on their first apartment.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the first time they&#8217;re getting to design and decorate the spaces they live in.\u00a0 So, they&#8217;ll need some inspiration and guidance for the time.<\/p>\n<p>Your peer&#8217;s blog post on <a href=\"https:\/\/diannedecor.com\/blog\/transform-your-space-with-these-10-apartment-decorating-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>10 Apartment Decorating Ideas<\/strong><\/span><\/a> maybe 10 years old at this point.\u00a0 That means your fresh content will be written in the context of what&#8217;s popular now and with the knowledge of what&#8217;s available right now.\u00a0 So, absolutely write about that.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t worry about the fact that it&#8217;s already been done.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, don&#8217;t forget that home decorating and interior design are creative arts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is no competition when you&#8217;re working in a creative space.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Interior decorating is a form of self-expression, and what looks nice to one person, may not to another.\u00a0 What&#8217;s functional for me maybe a nightmare for you.\u00a0 There is no right or wrong way to do it.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Blogging_Communities_Social_Media\"><\/span>Blogging Communities &amp;\u00a0Social Media<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Find a few blogging communities that you like online and engage with them.\u00a0 I have found that sharing and engaging with home decorating communities online has been incredibly motivating.<\/p>\n<p>I love seeing what other people are up to and how they solve problems.<\/p>\n<p>Sharing advice, tips, tools, and of course cheering each other on will keep you going.\u00a0 A little reassurance from a blogging friend that your efforts aren&#8217;t in vain is priceless.<\/p>\n<p>I love <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bloglovin&#8217;<\/span><\/strong> to find other blogs and get mine into syndication.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve also heard that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Medium<\/span><\/a><\/strong> is good, although I haven&#8217;t done much on that platform aside from setting up my profile.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite social networks are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/diannedecor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pinterest<\/span><\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dianne_decor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Instagram<\/span><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, the place where I spend the most time online is in my Tailwind Tribes.\u00a0 <strong><a
