Choosing host or hostess gifts can sometimes seem like a chore.  You’re not sure what they might like, what they already have, or how much to spend.

If you can relate, keep reading.

In this post I’m going to break down the 6 main types of hostess gifts and when to give them.

I’m hesitant to admit how many times I’ve waited until we were en route to a party to get a gift.

My fail-safe has always been to grab a bottle of wine or some store-bought cupcakes.

In fact, this is exactly what I did one Thanksgiving when my husband’s co-worker invited us to join them for a meal.

We were new in town and they wanted to show us a little hospitality, which we greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, we showed up with a bottle of wine for a couple who did not drink at all. Eeek!

I felt really bad.

I know it’s supposed to be the thought that counts, but I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed in myself that I didn’t take the time to find a more universally appropriate gift.

Especially for such a nice couple who really didn’t know us, but was kind enough to invite us to their home because they knew we’d be on our own for the holiday that year.

I resolved, never to make that mistake again.

That being said, let’s look at a few alternative hostess gift ideas

6 Types of Hostess Gifts

Edible Gifts

Fruit baskets, cheese trays, cookie platters, and cookie and cake mixes make for great hostess gifts.

Bring an edible gift for a small gathering (2 – 4 people).  This will allow the hostess to be able to set it our for everyone to share.

Or, you can give a baking gift like those cake and cookie mixes in a mason jar for your host to use later.

Decor

Vases, figurines, decorative bowls or dishes are a nice offering during the holidays.  Whether it’s the 4th of July, Thanksgiving, or Christmas a seasonal platter or decor item is a really nice gift idea for your host or hostess.

Flowers

Flower arrangements are a classic choice.

Or, the more trendy option at the moment is an indoor herb garden kit.

You can grab a small countertop kit as a gift.  This is a good idea if you know your host likes to cook.

If they’re into things like Blue Apron and Home Chef, they’ll enjoy the idea of having fresh basil, thyme, and other herbs in the kitchen.

Barware

Okay, here’s a category of gifts that you should only give if you’re sure your hostess is likely to either enjoy or serve alcoholic beverages.

Crystal decanters, cocktail mixing sets, margarita glasses, and coasters are lovely options for the amateur mixologist.

Gift Card

For some a gift card may seem like the easy way out, but a gift card to a restaurant that you know your host enjoys or you think they’ll like is a really thoughtful gift.

Especially, if your hosts are parents to young children.  This will likely be their ticket to a nice date night out of the house.
