Hi, it's Lindsay Diane from Diane Decor.com

In this video we're going to talk all about how to mix and match your sofas and chairs like a pro
0:11
We're going to talk about what exactly it means to mix and match, why you should do it, and how to do it
0:20
Let's get started. So what does it mean to mix and match furniture
0:24
To mix and match furniture means that you are carefully curating pieces
0:29
to go in a room that are in a variety of colors, textures, styles, and silhouettes
0:38
You are making a conscious effort to mix up all of these things
0:42
so that you do not have a room that looks like it is too matchy-matchy
0:49
I'm sure you have heard this term before. Matchy-matching means it all looks the same
0:55
And it's easy to fall into this trap because we are sold furniture sets. So when you go to the big furniture stores like rooms to go, Ashley
1:06
Home Store, places like that, they're going to sell furniture sets and they all look the same
1:12
because they are from the same designer. So they're going to sell you the sofa with the matching
1:18
love seed and the two accent chairs and they might all be beige and they might all have that
1:23
squared off rectangular look. They may all have peg legs to them because they're all mid-century
1:29
modern and it's just going to make your home look like a showroom if you take those exact pieces
1:37
just as they are in the set and bring them to your home but really what you want to do is you
1:43
want to carefully curates the pieces so that they work well together usually you want to have a
1:50
color scheme that helps unite all of the pieces in your room so you may do this using your
1:59
decorative accents like your pillows, your throw pillows, and maybe a throw blanket or something
2:06
like that, your area rug. It helps unify the look of the space even when you have pieces of
2:12
furniture that are different. So why should you mix and match your furniture? Beyond the aesthetic
2:20
of it, beyond saying, I don't want that uniform look, because some people like that uniform
2:25
luck. And that's perfectly fine. But there are other reasons why you might want to mix and match
2:31
your furniture. Number one is that it will make it easier later on down the line for you to
2:38
switch up your decorating style. So for instance, if you purchase a furniture set that is all
2:47
within that one style, let's say it's modern organic. And five years
2:55
from now, you're just not into it. You don't like the curved edges. You don't want that plain beige
3:02
everything. You want something that is a little bit more dynamic and colorful and has patterns and
3:10
things like that. Well, now guess what? You have a whole room full of the same thing and now you're
3:16
going to have to replace all of the same thing As opposed to if you were to have mixed and matched your furniture from the beginning you may be able to just replace one signature piece So if your sofa is just screaming mid modern and you want it to do something else
3:31
you can just replace that sofa and make it along the same color scheme as the other
3:38
things going on in your room. And then you can keep your accent chairs
3:41
You can keep your coffee table. You can keep your end tables. and it all work well together
3:47
It allows you the opportunity of flexibility later on down the line
3:51
when you mix and match that furniture and you don't let it all be in that one singular style or color or silhouette
4:00
The second reason to mix and match your furniture is that careful curation of your items gives you a more luxurious feel
4:09
Lots of people talk about, oh, how to get that luxe look
4:13
or the luxx look for less. Luxury and luxurious-looking rooms really all boil down to one thing
4:23
And that is choice. It's having the freedom of choice. It's having the luxury to have the money
4:28
to go out, to seek that really special something, to drive around town and make 50 different stops
4:35
until you find that perfect vase. That's luxury. That's not, I need a sofa
4:40
I need something to sit on. I just need the bare bones basics
4:44
I'm surviving with this piece of furniture. It's needed. It's necessary. It's beyond that
4:50
It's moving on to choice and having the luxury of choice, which everyone doesn't have
4:56
Right. So when you are mixing and matching furniture, you're curating, you're choosing over time the pieces that you want in that space
5:08
And when you do that, it's evident that you have chosen. these carefully and you've personalized the space and that gives it a more luxurious look
5:19
The third reason to mix and match your furniture is simply that furniture collections are just
5:26
out of date. So the time when you would go to Ashley Home Store and purchase that full
5:33
bedroom set with the tallboy dresser and the nightstands and the headboard and the footboard
5:40
and all those things together. It's just dated. And it's not even so much about the aesthetic
5:46
It's not about the look of it being too matchy-machy. It's that we are in an age of information
5:56
We are in an age where anyone can learn to do anything. And because we have so much information at our disposal
6:04
you have a lot of people that have more design knowledge or knowledge and just about
6:10
any area because it's being shared, especially on platforms like YouTube, right
6:15
We are in that information sharing era where it's easy to find out how to do just about anything
6:23
And before it wasn't. So before that's when we would go to the store and we would just buy the whole set
6:29
because we didn't know how to put together a room like an interior designer does
6:33
But now we do. We have the resources to learn the same tips and tricks that they are using and we can do things on our own now And so the idea that you would purchase something pre already done for you is just kind of dated because we all now have the knowledge to be able to look for certain pieces
6:56
to match them well, to create a color palette, to create a mood board, things like that
7:02
We just have more knowledge than we did back 30 years ago when these furniture
7:08
sets were all the rage. So how exactly do you mix and match your furniture? Let's talk about it
7:16
Number one, you want to keep your colors complementary and to balance your silhouettes. So there are a lot of
7:23
ways to go about creating a color palette for yourself. You can consult the color wheel. You can use
7:29
some of the online resources to help create a color palette for you. But just create something
7:36
where you don't have any sort of clashing colors and make sure your furniture stays within that scheme
7:42
and you've got a good footing. Now, as far as silhouettes go
7:46
you want to balance out bulkier, heavier furniture with things that are lighter and airier
7:53
So what I mean by this? If you have a traditional sofa
8:00
let's say you have like a, okay, like an old school Chesterfield sofa
8:05
Okay, this is something that is very substantial. It's got those nice, like, rounded arms to it
8:13
It's usually this kind of tufted thing. It's a solid piece of furniture
8:19
As opposed to you having something that is on peg legs. So something that is almost that mid-century modern style
8:28
where, you know, you're heavier up top and you're lighter down below
8:32
and you have these stick legs and you can kind of see past and through those stick legs onto what's behind that chair
8:40
With the Chesterfield, it's solid. You're not seeing past it. It has a heavy silhouette, whereas something that is a little bit more modern may have a lighter frame to it
8:54
You want to balance these two things. You don't want anything that's all one or the other
9:00
So when we say balance silhouettes, this is what we mean. Number two is you want to mix your textures and your patterns
9:09
So you don't necessarily want a single material represented for all of your furniture pieces
9:16
Again, this usually only happens when you buy a full set. So think about something like you might have a just a general like polyester performance fabric sofa
9:30
which a lot of people have. So let's say you have that
9:34
But then also maybe consider having a leather accent chair or maybe a leather love seat to go with it
9:42
Maybe having an all wood rocking chair in your sort of rustic chic living room is a good addition
9:51
Think about having different types of materials or textures going along with different patterns
9:59
So again we don want something that just all solid everything with no pattern So if your sofa is solid then you might want to add in a patterned accent chair or a patterned ottoman
10:13
Or if you have a set of furniture that seems to be very heavy on one fabric
10:21
consider adding in a metal coffee table or a glass end tables, things like that
10:28
So you're mixing your materials. your textures and your patterns. And the third tip for mixing and matching your furniture is to make sure you balance out
10:38
the size and the scale of your furniture. Mix things up a bit
10:43
So if you have a large sofa, consider adding a couple of little poof footstools to it
10:50
that are smaller in size or make sure that the scale of your coffee table is right for
10:56
the space that you need to fill. think about those sorts of things so that you don't have a room that looks like it's just thrown together, right
11:06
Because that's the risk when you do the mix and match of furniture
11:10
If you don't have a good, solid foundation for your room that is, again, your color scheme, your silhouette of your furniture, and again, now your size and your scale of your furniture, if you don't have some type of
11:28
of uniformity to it, then you will look like you've just thrown together this hodgepodge
11:34
of items and they just really won't go. You also want to be careful not to overcrowd your space
11:42
Sometimes if you have just one big dominant piece like a modular sofa, there's not a ton
11:48
of room for anything else. So you want to be careful not to have too many pieces of furniture in one space because you
11:58
because that's going to just make things crowded. It will be hard to move around them
12:02
And it will just throw off the look. So if it comes down to it and you have that big, huge sectional sofa
12:10
just make sure that you have a coffee table that's the right size that's going to span the length of your sofa
12:16
Maybe you have an accent plant. Maybe you don't have too many other pieces of furniture in that space
12:21
and instead rely on accessories to help balance out that one really large
12:28
statement piece of furniture. That's it for this video, so remember to keep your colors
12:34
complementary and create a nice color scheme for your room, balance out your silhouettes, mix in
12:42
patterns and textures, and make sure you balance the scale and size of your furniture pieces
12:50
This will set you up perfectly for mixing and matching your furniture like a pro
