Hi, it's Lindsay Diane from
0:05
dianecor.com.
0:06
In this video, we're going to talk all
0:08
about how to edit your space. Now,
0:10
editing your space is the final step in
0:14
achieving a look that is polished and
0:16
intentional in your home. And while
0:19
decluttering and organizing are
0:21
essential, it's the thoughtful design
0:24
choices that you make when you edit your
0:26
space that are really going to take it
0:27
to the next level and enhance the
0:29
beauty, the functionality, and the flow
0:32
of your home. So, let's get started with
0:35
nine ways to edit your space. Number one
0:38
is to adjust your furniture layout.
0:42
Rearranging the furniture in your room
0:43
can really transform your room. And best
0:46
of all, it's not going to cost you
0:48
anything to do it. So consider the
0:50
following things.
0:53
Improve the flow and usability by
0:55
ensuring that the walkways are clear and
0:58
the furniture placement encourages easy
1:01
movement. So, if you have a space on
1:06
your sofa where you really love to sit,
1:08
but you have to meander around the edge
1:10
of a side table to get there or around a
1:13
lamp or around an ottoman and it doesn't
1:15
have a nice clear throughway to that
1:18
space, consider rearranging some of
1:20
those pieces of furniture for a better
1:22
flow. You also want to make sure the
1:24
scale of the furniture is appropriate
1:26
for the room. You don't want anything
1:28
that's too oversized or too small for
1:31
the space. So, make sure that the
1:33
furniture in your space is in proportion
1:35
to the size of the room. And the last
1:38
thing that you want to check for is to
1:39
make sure that you have a defined zone
1:42
for your furniture or your conversation
1:44
seating. This is particularly important
1:46
if you have like an open concept plan
1:49
where you really need to anchor your
1:51
space with an area rug and group your
1:54
furniture together in a seating
1:56
arrangement that looks like it's meant
1:58
to go together and is not just kind of
2:00
floating out in space there. So, make
2:03
sure that you're looking at these things
2:05
while you are editing your space.
2:07
Sometimes simply shifting a sofa or
2:10
repositioning a chair or even rotating a
2:12
table can make your space feel much more
2:15
inviting and functional. Number two is
2:18
to refine your color palette. Creating a
2:21
cohesive color palette in your home is
2:24
really crucial to the overall look and
2:26
feel of your spaces. Not only
2:29
individually, but the way that they
2:31
connect and flow with each other. Some
2:33
of the things that you want to look for
2:35
when you are editing your space for
2:37
color are to remove clashing colors or
2:41
anything that's an overly trendy color
2:44
that really doesn't go with the overall
2:46
look and feel of your space. So every
2:48
year we have things like the colors of
2:50
the year. Pantone comes out with them.
2:52
Sherwin Williams comes out with them.
2:54
And then of course you know interior
2:56
design tends to follow fashion. So
2:59
colors that are popular in fashion tend
3:02
to come also into fashion in home decor.
3:06
And these colors you see in little
3:09
decorative accessories and knickknacks
3:11
like so think about the Target dollar
3:14
spot um and places like uh Dollar
3:18
General and Dollar Tree. Little
3:22
knick-knacks for the season tend to
3:24
follow a color trend. And usually that's
3:27
established by fashion. But if you think
3:30
about it, so things that are very
3:32
popular right now, butter yellow, sky
3:36
blue, pale pink, all of these sort of
3:39
pastely kind of colors are very popular
3:42
right now. And you're going to start to
3:43
see decorative accents in those colors.
3:46
But that doesn't necessarily mean that
3:48
that's an appropriate color to infuse
3:49
into your space. So, if you like to stay
3:52
on trend with your decorative accents,
3:54
just make sure that you're not falling
3:56
too far into the trendy colors, instead
4:00
go with trendy silhouettes in a neutral
4:03
color.
4:05
That way, you will ensure that it will
4:07
mesh well within your space. The other
4:10
thing that you want to look for when
4:11
you're editing your space for color is
4:14
to make sure that you have a balance of
4:16
the colors. So, whatever palette you've
4:19
chosen for your space, make sure that
4:22
you have a nice balance of it throughout
4:24
all of your spaces so that you don't
4:27
have, let's say you have a color palette
4:29
that is, you know, sage, cream, and
4:34
mocha brown. You don't want an all brown
4:37
room, and you don't want an all sage
4:39
room and an all, you know, beige room.
4:42
You want to make sure that all of those
4:44
colors are evenly distributed and
4:46
balanced throughout your spaces. And
4:48
last but not least, keeping your color
4:51
palette simple with a nice neutral base
4:55
and then layering in soft complimentary
4:58
colors is always a great rule of thumb.
5:02
So, if you are looking through your
5:04
space and you're really not sure if the
5:06
color palette is working for you, try to
5:08
strip it down to a neutral base and then
5:13
start to go back in and layer in some of
5:15
your accent colors. This is a great way
5:18
to edit out some clashing colors or
5:21
things that just are no longer working
5:23
for you in your space. Number three is
5:26
enhancing lighting. Now, the lighting in
5:28
your space dramatically affects the
5:31
ambiance in your room. And there are
5:34
several ways to go about editing your
5:36
lighting. First up is to swap out any
5:40
overly harsh or outdated lighting for a
5:44
more layered look. So, for example, if
5:47
you still have in your kitchen a big
5:49
fluorescent overhead light, consider
5:52
swapping that out for something a little
5:54
bit more modern, like maybe a semif
5:57
flush mount chandelier or some recessed
6:01
lighting or pair it with some pendant
6:03
lighting. I actually have a video that's
6:05
all about kitchen lighting, specifically
6:07
for kitchens that don't have kitchen
6:09
islands. I will link that in the
6:11
description box below. So instead of
6:14
having that one big main light, consider
6:18
layering in some other lighting options
6:21
into your space. So in your kitchen,
6:23
again, you can swap out a harsh
6:25
fluorescent light for something a little
6:27
bit more subtle and then pairing that
6:30
with some pendant lights or some recess
6:32
lighting or some under the cabinet
6:34
lighting. These are all really great
6:37
options for you to be able to turn on
6:40
maybe one or two of the lights while
6:42
leaving off another one in the evening.
6:44
Or maybe in the evenings you just have
6:46
your under cabinet lighting after a
6:48
certain time and it gives you a really
6:49
nice soft subtle glow where you can
6:52
still move around your kitchen. You can
6:53
still get things from your fridge but
6:55
you don't need to have that big harsh
6:56
overhead light on. Similarly, in the
6:59
living room, you may want to opt for
7:02
using table lamps and floor lamps and
7:05
sconces instead of having a big overhead
7:09
light or fan on. When editing your space
7:12
for lighting, you also want to factor in
7:15
natural lighting. Look at what your
7:17
window treatments are doing for your
7:20
lighting. Are they blocking out that
7:23
light? Do I have something in front of
7:25
my window that's blocking out my light
7:27
that isn't just curtains or shades or
7:29
blinds? Do I have an artificial tree
7:32
that's blocking that space? Do I have a
7:34
piece of furniture that's really dimming
7:36
down the light that is coming in through
7:38
my window? Look at all of those things
7:41
so that you can maximize the natural
7:42
light in your space. And then during the
7:45
daytime, you will have a more soft,
7:47
inviting glow without having to turn on
7:50
a ton of lights to light your space.
7:52
Good lighting can elevate even the most
7:54
simply designed spaces and make them
7:56
feel more inviting and comfortable.
7:59
Number four is editing the textures and
8:01
materials in your space. Having a
8:04
well-balanced mix of textures and
8:06
materials will add depth and interest
8:09
into your space. Thoughtfully combined
8:11
materials such as wood, glass, metal,
8:14
and fabric to create contrast in your
8:17
space. The next thing that you'll want
8:18
to do is to remove excessive patterns or
8:21
textures that compete with one another.
8:25
So, let's say you have a lavender
8:29
handknit chunky blanket and it's made
8:32
out of like chenille fabric or something
8:35
like that. something that has a nice
8:38
fuzzy inviting texture to it and you're
8:41
pairing that next to a pillow cover that
8:45
is like a green and white paisley. Those
8:48
two things are going to clash because
8:51
the texture of the handk knit blanket is
8:55
really going to be screaming for
8:56
attention. That's really your statement
8:58
piece in that space. But a paisley
9:02
pattern can be very busy depending upon
9:05
how big the florals or the swirls are on
9:08
it. And so you don't want to pair those
9:11
two things, those two attentiongrabbing
9:13
um patterns and textures together. So
9:16
this is what we mean when we start to
9:18
say that you want to edit your space for
9:20
texture and pattern. either choose one
9:24
bold item like a bold texture or one
9:27
bold pattern to really accent your
9:30
space, but make sure that they are not
9:33
competing with one another. It's great
9:35
to have layers of texture to add a lot
9:39
of depth and interest into your space,
9:41
but you don't want them to be clashing
9:43
with other patterns or textures. And if
9:47
you find yourself having trouble
9:48
balancing textures and patterns, go
9:52
instead for an overall neutral look and
9:55
then just balance smooth textures with
9:59
rougher textures. You also want to
10:01
balance smooth and textured surfaces for
10:05
a more refined look. And by this we mean
10:08
um your furniture pieces. So, your your
10:12
desk and a little side table, maybe your
10:16
buffet cabinet. You want to make sure
10:19
that not everything is super smooth and
10:21
super polished all the time, but you
10:24
also don't necessarily want everything
10:26
that's sort of handmade and roughedged
10:28
either. See if you can work in a
10:31
combination of the two things there and
10:33
create a nice balance between things
10:36
that have a textured feel to them or
10:38
things that maybe have a live wood edge
10:40
to them or a more organic form to them
10:44
with things that are just smooth factory
10:47
rectangular sort of pieces. Mixing
10:51
materials intentionally will give you a
10:54
layered and more sophisticated look and
10:56
steer you away from having a space that
10:58
looks too cluttered or chaotic. Number
11:01
five is to scale your decor and
11:04
accessories. Your decor should
11:06
complement your space and not overwhelm
11:09
it. And the way that you want to go
11:11
about editing the scale of your decor is
11:14
to first remove any oversized or
11:18
undersized items and replace them with
11:21
things that are a more appropriate
11:23
scale. Now, if you are unsure if your
11:26
item is too big or too small for a
11:29
space, simply swap it out. Use a trial
11:32
and error method and see how a different
11:36
piece feels in that space. So, if you
11:40
have a huge oversized lamp on an end
11:44
table and you're thinking, "Maybe this
11:46
is a little bit too big for this space.
11:48
I can't really fit anything else on this
11:50
table. Maybe I should scale down." Try
11:53
it out. Even if you don't have a smaller
11:55
lamp to swap out temporarily, choose a
11:59
item that still has a good vertical
12:02
height to it that would mimic the height
12:05
of that lamp and just scale it down a
12:08
little bit. find something that's like a
12:10
medium-sized item instead of a largesiz
12:12
item and just see how it balances out
12:15
that space. And then later on you can go
12:18
and procure that particular lighting
12:21
accent or whatever it is that you want,
12:23
a vase, a potted plant, whatever it is.
12:27
You can get specific later. But if you
12:29
are just trying to test out and see if
12:32
something is maybe too big or too small
12:34
for the space, just go ahead and swap it
12:36
out with a temporary item and see how
12:39
the overall look is. And that will help
12:43
direct you towards finding a better
12:45
replacement item. You also want to make
12:47
sure that you're grouping your
12:48
decorative items intentionally rather
12:51
than having them sort of scattered along
12:53
a surface. So, we talked about a few of
12:56
the techniques for grouping items in the
13:00
video, five simple decorating ideas. I
13:02
will also leave that linked in the
13:03
description box below. But whether you
13:06
are using like the stack method and you
13:08
have a stack of decorative books and
13:10
maybe a vase on top or a candle on top
13:14
or you're making mini vignettes that sit
13:16
on top of a tray or you're using a set
13:19
of items to sort of create a little bit
13:21
of balance and symmetry on a countertop
13:23
or on a tabletop. Make sure that you are
13:27
grouping your items intentionally. And
13:29
last but not least, you also want to
13:31
make sure that you are incorporating a
13:33
variety of heights in with your decor.
13:37
So, you don't want everything that's
13:38
sort of at the same height all across
13:41
the board, whether you have them grouped
13:43
together or not. They're not really
13:45
going to balance each other out well.
13:47
And you really want this with your
13:49
decorative accents. You want a little
13:51
bit of variety. You want to be able to
13:53
strike a balance between something that
13:55
is tall and something that is short,
13:57
something that is wide and something
13:59
that is narrow. So, look at your
14:02
decorative accessories. Make sure that
14:04
they're grouped together and make sure
14:05
that you have a nice balance of heights
14:08
and a mix of heights going on with the
14:12
accessories that you're using on your
14:14
horizontal surfaces. So whether it's
14:17
your desktop, your console table, your
14:20
bookshelf,
14:21
whatever it is that you're decorating,
14:23
make sure that you have nice grouping
14:25
and a nice variety there. A few
14:27
well-placed, meaningful accessories are
14:30
far more effective than an overwhelming
14:34
display of decorative items. Number six
14:37
is to update your wall art and mirrors.
14:41
Overall, wall decor plays a major role
14:44
in decorating a space. No matter how
14:47
much decor or furniture you may have, if
14:51
your walls are blank, the whole space is
14:53
going to feel incomplete. So, when
14:56
you're editing your space, consider
14:58
these things. Ensure your artwork is
15:01
proportionate to the wall and the
15:03
surrounding furniture.
15:05
Make sure that you're using mirrors
15:07
strategically to help enhance natural
15:10
light and make a space feel bigger.
15:13
Generally speaking, mirrors as decor are
15:18
meant to help reflect light and brighten
15:22
a space. Sure, they can create a lot of
15:25
visual interest, especially if they have
15:27
a really beautiful ornate frame on them,
15:30
but they are much more effective as a
15:33
tool for bouncing light around a space
15:37
and really brightening everything up.
15:39
So, don't miss out on an opportunity to
15:43
enhance the natural light in your space
15:45
by incorporating some mirrors. Another
15:48
way to update the wall art and decor in
15:51
your space is to create a gallery wall
15:55
by curating your wall art pieces and
15:59
grouping them together instead of just
16:01
having them randomly hung on different
16:04
walls. Instead, you can create a
16:06
decorative focal point by bringing those
16:09
things together intentionally and
16:11
creating a gallery wall type situation.
16:15
Now, there are lots of different gallery
16:17
walls that you can create. Um, I have a
16:21
video and a blog post all about that
16:24
that I will link in the description. But
16:27
in general, a gallery wall is a
16:30
fantastic way to update your space if
16:33
you have a lot of small decorative
16:36
pieces on your wall. So, if you are
16:39
finding that in your space you have a
16:41
lot of wall art or decor that is not
16:44
quite at the appropriate scale and you
16:47
really need a much larger impact,
16:50
consider starting to group some of those
16:51
things together to create a much larger
16:55
visual impact as a unit instead of
16:58
having them hung individually on their
17:00
own throughout your space. Intentional
17:03
wall decor choices make a home feel
17:06
thoughtfully designed. So, don't forget
17:10
to edit your wall decor. Number seven is
17:14
layering and editing textiles. Textiles
17:17
contribute to the overall comfort of
17:20
your space. And now, earlier we talked
17:23
about textures and materials, but here
17:26
you want to zone in on layering
17:29
different textiles together. So by this
17:33
we mean your curtains, your drapes, your
17:37
blankets, your pillows, your rugs. All
17:42
of these things layer together to create
17:45
a softness in a room. That softness is
17:48
inviting. It's comfortable. It's the
17:51
thing that makes you feel like you want
17:54
to come in and sit down. So to edit the
17:57
textiles in your space and to properly
18:00
layer the textiles in your space,
18:02
consider doing these things.
18:06
Swap out heavy or outdated drapes for
18:10
light and airy curtains.
18:12
Edit throw pillows and blankets to
18:15
complement the color scheme and invest
18:18
in high quality textiles like linen,
18:21
wool, or velvet for a more luxurious
18:24
feel. Layering in textiles adds warmth
18:28
and sophistication without making your
18:31
space feel cluttered. Number eight is
18:34
enhancing functionality.
18:36
Editing your space also means making it
18:39
work better for your lifestyle. So
18:41
beyond the aesthetics, make sure that
18:44
your space is actually working for you.
18:47
To go about editing your space for
18:48
functionality, here's what you want to
18:50
do. Start by removing pieces of
18:53
furniture that are not functional or
18:56
replacing them with multifunctional
18:59
pieces. So, some swaps that I'm thinking
19:02
of are like standing desks. If you want
19:06
to increase the functionality of a space
19:09
and you know, you know, I'd really love
19:11
like a walking pad or a little mini
19:14
treadmill that I can stand and walk on.
19:17
Well, consider swapping out your
19:18
traditional office desk for a standing
19:22
desk or a wall-mounted desk so that you
19:25
can stand up and put a piece of exercise
19:28
equipment under there and basically
19:31
multi-function while you are working on
19:34
your computer. Another multi-functional
19:37
piece is a storage ottoman that has the
19:40
flip tray top. So, it may have a nice
19:43
soft upholstered top and then you can
19:46
open it up. You have storage inside. You
19:48
can flip it over and then you have a
19:50
hard top tray where you can put your cup
19:52
or your snack or whatever. And you have
19:56
this multi-functional piece instead of
19:58
having to rely on maybe you have some
20:00
side tables that are taking up too much
20:02
room or you have little TV trays that
20:05
you really don't love. If it's something
20:08
that is not serving the function that
20:10
you need, consider getting rid of it or
20:12
swapping it out for a multi-functional
20:14
piece. You also want to make sure that
20:17
you are optimizing your storage
20:18
solutions so that you are minimizing
20:21
clutter in your space. A cluttered
20:23
space, things on the floor, things piled
20:26
up in the corner makes it hard to
20:28
maneuver around. Things stacked up on
20:30
tabletops or countertops makes it hard
20:33
for you to use them. But if you're
20:35
maximizing your storage space and you're
20:37
editing your space to make sure that you
20:39
have those storage solutions, it will
20:42
make the whole space overall feel more
20:46
functional and rather be more
20:47
functional. You also want to ensure good
20:50
traffic flow through your spaces. And by
20:54
this, we want to make sure that paths
20:56
are clear. whether they're in and out of
20:58
the room or to and from sitting areas.
21:02
You want to make sure that these are
21:03
paths are clear and that you have the
21:07
right sort of again storage systems in
21:11
place so that you can minimize clutter
21:13
that may be impeding paths and also have
21:16
sort of organizational systems in place
21:18
in your rooms that will help keep
21:22
everything uh accessible. So when you're
21:25
coming into your home office and you're
21:27
trying to get to your filing cabinet or
21:30
you want to get to files or books, they
21:33
are all organized in a way where it's
21:35
easy for you to access them and get to
21:38
and thus making that room much more
21:40
functional for you. The same can be said
21:43
for a bedroom, a kitchen especially, and
21:47
the bathroom. A well-edited home isn't
21:50
just stylish, it's also practical and
21:53
easy to live in. And last but not least,
21:56
number nine is incorporating negative
21:58
space. Sometimes the most impactful
22:01
decision is to just leave a space open
22:05
and blank. Give your eye a chance to
22:08
rest. You do not have to have your eye
22:11
bouncing from one thing to the next
22:13
thing to the next thing in a space.
22:15
Having some breathing room and negative
22:17
space is always a good thing. So, you
22:20
don't necessarily want to have every
22:22
single wall of your room covered in wall
22:25
art. You can have some breathing space
22:28
and leave a smaller wall blank or a
22:30
smaller segment of a wall blank. You
22:32
don't have to worry about covering all
22:34
of it. The same thing can be said for a
22:37
sitting area. Just because you may have
22:40
purchased a, you know, a a sofa set that
22:44
comes with a love seat, a sofa, two
22:47
accent tables, a coffee table, two
22:50
chairs, a ottoman. It doesn't mean that
22:53
you need to use all of those pieces in a
22:55
room. It's good to have a little bit of
22:58
breathing space. So, make sure that you
23:01
are allowing breathing room overall in
23:04
your space so that you're not visually
23:07
overwhelmed. You also want to resist the
23:10
urge to fill every wall and every
23:12
surface in every corner. And then
23:14
finally, you want to embrace minimalism
23:17
in certain areas and let standout pieces
23:21
kind of shine. So when you have too many
23:24
pieces that are competing with something
23:27
really special like let's say you have a
23:31
handcarved
23:33
wooden sculpture that's you know 18 in
23:36
tall and it's beautiful and it's
23:38
magnificent and you want to spotlight it
23:41
but you have too much going on flanked
23:43
on the sides of it on your console table
23:46
or you have too busy of a pattern of
23:48
wallpaper or wall art that's going on
23:51
and it's competing with it. It's good to
23:54
sometimes leave certain areas blank so
23:56
that you can make something else really
23:59
shine and stand out. Negative space
24:01
helps create balance in your space and
24:04
it makes it feel more elegant and
24:06
intentional. So that's it for this video
24:08
