Hi, it's Lindsay Diane from Diane Decor.com

In this video, we're going to talk all about outdoor entertaining in the fall
0:10
The fall is the perfect time to flex your hostess skills. Even if you've never done any outdoor entertaining at all and have no experience, the fall is
0:21
a great time to do it. Mostly because the weather is comfortable, the flies and the mosquitoes are kind of at bay
0:30
And there are a lot of outdoor activities and sporting events in the fall that give you
0:36
a chance to invite people over and have a gathering. So whether you're thinking about having a Halloween party or a homecoming celebration or
0:47
maybe just a watch party or some tailgating, the fall is the perfect time to entertain outdoors
0:53
In this video, I'm going to go through all of the pros and cons of entertaining outdoors in the fall
0:59
and I'm also going to give you eight great tips that are going to help your next outdoor event go off perfectly
1:07
Let's get started. So let's jump into the pros and cons of entertaining outside in the fall
1:14
So con number one, it can get quite chilly and you can have some early snow depending upon where you are in the country
1:23
So if you are in the New England, Great Lakes area, or up in the Pacific Northwest
1:29
you may be having a snow flurry or snow shower here and there
1:36
So try to make sure that you plan your outdoor event for September or early October at the latest
1:45
because beyond that you have a higher chance of snow. I remember growing up in Rhode Island that there would be often times where on Halloween night
1:55
you could get some snow flurries. It was very chilly out there
1:58
So if you're in those parts of the country, make sure that you stick to September and early
2:04
October for your outdoor entertaining if you don't want to have to have a backup plan of
2:11
bringing everyone in the house to stay warm. Also, remember that once the sun goes down, it gets
2:18
chilly quickly. So try to plan your outdoor event during the daytime when the sun is shining
2:24
and you can have some warm, sunny areas to kind of sit around on picnic benches or around tables in your backyard and everyone be comfortable
2:35
If you live in the southern states like I do now, you know, Texas, anywhere in the southern bell, Louisiana, you know, Florida, Georgia, any of those states, you can entertain well into late November outside comfortably
2:52
Another con for entertaining outdoors in the fall is that there's a lot more lawn care to stay on top of with all of the falling leaves
3:02
So we all know that wet leaves can really be a hazard You can slip on them on the sidewalk or on your driveway So you have to factor that in
3:13
If you're going to entertain outdoors in the fall, know that you're going to have to take that time to clean up your yard
3:19
get the leaves bagged up, and make it so that it's not a dangerous situation for anyone that comes to visit your home
3:26
Okay, so now on to the pros. The first big pro is that there are less pests and less miscarriage
3:32
out in the fall. So you can have your food outdoors and not be totally swarmed by flies
3:40
You can be out there roasting s'mores on the patio and not be inundated by mosquitoes
3:47
It's just a much nicer experience in the fall than it is in the summer
3:51
So that's a big pro for entertaining outdoors in the fall. Another pro for entertaining in the fall is just the availability of guests
4:00
In the summertime, there's a lot of fun. Lots of travel going on. Kids are at summer camp. They're visiting grandparents. People are going
4:08
on vacations. It's harder to gather everyone together in the summertime outside of, let's say
4:14
maybe 4th of July. Usually people are bouncing around and they're doing all the things that
4:19
they can't do during the school year. So because the fall, you know, everyone's still in school
4:25
everyone tends to be around. So you have a better likelihood of getting all of your guest list together
4:33
and having them be available to celebrate with you or do whatever it is that you want to do
4:39
whether it's tailgating or homecoming or Halloween, people are going to be close by
4:44
because they're not traveling as much in the fall. And the last pro for entertaining outdoors in the fall
4:50
is that you can have more people. Because you can have your event outdoors
4:55
can generally host more people than you would be able to inside your home. So if you want to have
5:02
a larger gathering, the fall is the perfect time to do that. There's a reason why fall weddings are so
5:08
popular. You can have everyone gathered outdoors and you don't have to worry about the limits of
5:15
being inside a reception hall or inside a church. You can have a lot more people outdoors and comfortable
5:23
in the fall than let's say in the summer where everyone's going to be hot or in the spring
5:29
when it might be raining or in the winter when it's going to be too cold
5:33
Fall is the ideal time to gather lots of people together and you won't have to worry about
5:39
being limited by the space inside your home or inside a you know a venue or a hall
5:45
You can have everyone gathered outdoors and have a great time. On to the outdoor entertaining tips for the fall
5:54
Number one is to provide a hot beverage option. This is a great way for people to warm up their bodies without having to retreat indoors
6:03
A nice hot beverage is always great in the fall. Of course hot chocolate or hot cocoa is the very first thing that people think of but there are a lot of other options that you can choose from You can do vanilla chai latte you can do a pumpkin spice latte you can do a London fog apple cider
6:23
There are a lot of peppermint mocha. There are a lot of hot beverages that people would love to have in the fall
6:31
Just give people at least one option. Maybe two would be nice. But give them a nice hot option so that they can warm themselves up if they're outside
6:39
tip number two is to have patio heaters or fire pit if your event is going to go into the evening hours and the sun is down
6:49
Like we said earlier, when the sun goes down in the fall, it gets chilly very quickly, and it's nice to have a space that is at least heated or where people can gather outside
7:00
Again, lots of people do like to transition folks inside the house in the evening, but if that's not going to be an option for you, make sure that you have to have
7:09
have some sort of warmer setting outdoors. So whether it be chairs that are gathered around a fire pit
7:16
or some patio heaters that are scattered along your patio area, either one of those is a great option for entertaining outdoors
7:26
and keeping people warm and comfortable. Tip number three, if you want to have a sit-down dinner outdoors in the fall
7:34
is to get one of the tabletop fire pits. Now, this is great for so many reasons
7:41
Beyond the ambiance of it, it's great for keeping bugs away. It's also going to give off a little bit of heat
7:49
So if you have maybe eight guests or ten guests gathered around the table
7:53
use your centerpiece space as an opportunity to put a long rectangular tabletop fire pit
8:00
It's great to look at. It's going to throw off a little bit of warmth, and it's going to keep the bugs away
8:05
Tip number four is to embrace some of the ones. the seasonal trends and you use that as a party favor if you're giving away something like that
8:15
So let's say, you know, we know smores are really great during the fall
8:20
Everybody likes to roast marshmallows during the fall. It's nice to get around the fire pit or the fireplace and do that
8:27
So maybe consider putting a little smores kit together that people can take to go or that they can
8:33
pick up from a table and then go to the fire pit and roast their marshmallows
8:38
That's a really cool idea. Something else that would be great is, you know, warm peanuts
8:44
Having bags of warm peanuts, that's another thing that's really popular during the fall time
8:49
It would be a nice addition to any outdoor event. Number five is to offer warm soup
8:56
So earlier we talked about having a hot beverage to help warm them up
9:00
Soup is another great option. Just make sure it's a sippable soup, something that maybe is pureed and easy to
9:08
from a mug that's not going to require anyone to sit there with a spoon and, you know
9:14
having too much fuss about it. Let it be a sippable soup that you have in a big crock pot or something like that that people can just ladle themselves into a little cup It could be a coffee cup It could just be a little mug And they will be able to warm themselves up get a little snack It a really great treat
9:33
to have a soup on hand for entertaining outdoors in the fall. Tip number six is to have some outdoor
9:41
activities that keep people moving around. We all know that if you're moving around, you're going to
9:46
stay warmer than if you're just sitting in a chair. So consider having a few different options
9:52
so you could do like horseshoes or cornhole, ring toss. If you want, you could do like a
9:59
shuffleboard or a giant connect four or giant tumbling towers or jenga. All of these things
10:07
are really fun to set up and easy to set up in your backyard that will keep people mobile
10:13
and moving around. Five Below is a really great place to get these sort of jumbo games inexpensively
10:19
They've got like jumbo twister and all sorts of things like that for the kids. And of course
10:24
the adults can play too. So if you're looking to set up something and you have kind of all ages
10:30
present, check out Five Below and pick up, you know, three or four different activities that you can
10:36
put out in the lawn. That's a great way to entertain your guests outdoors. Tip number seven is to offer
10:43
or cushion seating. Ideally, you should offer both, particularly if you have metal patio chairs
10:51
So, of course, that metal is going to be cold, and it's nice to have something in between
10:56
you and the metal seat so that it's not kind of sucking away all of your heat
11:03
And then remember, blankets are really nice. They're nice for everyone, but especially if you have older folks visiting your home
11:10
they may get chilly quickly. And so having a blanket that they can just throw on their lap and be able to sit at a table outside and still be comfortable is a really nice gesture
11:23
And tip number eight is to try to place your seating areas in full sun
11:29
This is going to help keep people warm without having to use the patio heaters and things like that
11:36
If you put people in the shade, we know what happens, right? It's like 10 degrees cooler in the shade than it is in the sun
11:43
So in the fall, it's a good time to be in full sun. You don't want to have your patio umbrellas up blocking that sunshine
11:52
Let the sun help keep everyone warm and comfortable and try to put all of your seating areas in full sun
11:59
