Hi, it's Lindsay Diane from Diane Decor.com

In this video, let's talk about three things that you should always do before you decorate
0:11
While lots of us like to jump right in and do some online shopping or go to home goods or Target
0:17
find some cute things, bring them home and try to fit them into our space
0:22
we often end up having trouble really making the room look good with the new items because we're going to
0:29
because we've forgotten to do these three things first. So in this video, I'm going to talk all about the things that you should do before you start shopping and before you start decorating your space
0:39
Let's get started. The first thing is to declutter placeholder items. And so when I'm saying declutter, I don't mean going through the drawers, getting rid of things that you're not using
0:52
I mean the things that are out there as decor that you have just to fill a space
0:58
a space or as a temporary solution to a problem and you're hoping to find something better later
1:05
remove those items from the space. That is going to give you a realistic look at where you're at
1:12
in that space and the holes that need to be filled. And so once you remove those placeholder items
1:17
so I'm talking about things like maybe a vase that you've had for years and years and you moved
1:23
into a new home and you didn't really have a space to put it. So you kind of put it on this end table
1:28
even though you don't really like it there, but it's someplace for it to go. Or you have an old-looking, you know, set of candle holders that you've really wanted to replace
1:41
The old ones are there because they fill out the space, but you don't really love them. Remove those
1:46
So anything that you're not in love with, declutter it from the space
1:50
Any placeholder items remove them so that you have a realistic look at the base that you working with and then you going to go in and make a list of those spaces that you trying to fill You don want to run to the store blindly and just look at things that look nice
2:07
that kind of match your style and bring them home, and then they really don't go where you need them to go
2:14
or they're not big enough to fill that space, or maybe they're too big to fill that space
2:20
There could be a lot of things that could affect the way
2:24
you are able to place items when you go shopping kind of blind way
2:29
So instead, once you remove those placeholder items, make a list of all of those spaces that
2:34
you're trying to fill. So I want to fill the tiny little skinny cabinet in between the refrigerator and the oven
2:42
Or I want something that's going to decorate where the back splashes behind the stove
2:50
Or you may want something that has some height for an end table or you want something that's very large that's going to be like a floor vase or something
2:58
like that. Make a list of those items so that when you go shopping, you can target those specific
3:04
things to fill into your space and it'd be a much more effective shopping trip than if you were
3:11
to go in blind and are trying to fit things in where they really just don't work. In the end
3:18
you're going to end up with a space that you truly love. You won't have any placeholder items. You'll
3:23
have things that fit the right size, the right style, the right color for your space, and you'll
3:29
have a beautiful put-together look. The second thing that you should do before you decorate your
3:35
space is, of course, to clean the space. It doesn't matter how beautifully you arrange things
3:42
When you step back and you look at it, there's specks of things on the carpet and the windows
3:47
are all smudgy and, you know, your glass coffee table isn't sparkling. It really makes a big
3:53
difference these little things And so before you decorate make sure you clean that space You may feel differently about it once it clean opposed to it having toys on the floor or a little you know
4:07
scraps of paper or whatever. If the kids have been in there and made a mess
4:11
it's hard to really get a good grasp of what that space looks like
4:15
when it's nice, sparkly clean, and tidy. So definitely do that first before you start making any lists of things
4:22
that you may want to have. And the third thing that you should do before you start decorating your space
4:27
is to take a photograph of that space. That is the best way to get like a third person perspective
4:35
on the way a space really looks. You would be surprised at how bare a space can look
4:42
once you take a photograph of it as compared to being inside that space
4:47
There's just something about it where it just catches everything at once
4:51
and you're really able to easily, identify the areas of a room that either need to be balanced out. Maybe something is not
4:58
proportional. Maybe something is a little too sparse. Maybe something is a little too short for that
5:04
shelf. You can see that in a photograph in a way that you just can't see it with the naked eye
5:11
It's a great way to almost get a third person's look at your space. And this is really good
5:18
especially because you live in your space. You're used to seeing things in a certain way
5:22
and somebody else that comes in may be experiencing that space in a very different way than you
5:29
And a good gauge for how they may be seeing your space is to take a photograph
5:35
So once you take that photograph, look for things where, you know, okay, the spacing is off on
5:40
this bookshelf. There's something a little off here. Maybe I need a different item to fill in
5:45
this space or look for, you know, do all my colors kind of coordinate and complicate
5:52
one another or is there something a little bit off with this rug and this pillow you be able to pick out things like that very easily with a photograph So zone in on anything that looks a little bit off and then put that on your list of
6:08
things to purchase or to redecorate, whether you are shopping your own home and rearranging
6:14
things, whether you're going to the thrift store, whether you're shopping on Amazon, whatever
6:18
it is. Make that list of items. and then you can target those specifically to decorate without having to buy a bunch of stuff
6:27
that ends up not fitting and working well and then returning it. Of course, if you're working with an empty room and you're starting from scratch, you can skip this step
6:37
But there are also a lot of ways for you to get some help reimagining your space when you take a photograph
6:46
So nowadays you can use some of the AI tools. I will leave a link to one that I really like below
6:52
You can take a photo of your space and then upload it and say
6:56
reimagine this space for me and it will redecorate that space for you
7:00
It may swap out some pieces of furniture. It may rearrange your furniture for you
7:05
It may add different decorative elements. It may add a bookshelf where there wasn't one before
7:10
or may add some artwork on the wall where there wasn't one before. And you may really like the way that that looks
7:15
It's a great way to get some design help and a fresh, look at your space by just reimagining it using some of the AI tools that are out today
7:26
Again, I will leave a link to some of my favorites below in the description box
