hi it's Lindsay Diane from Diane
0:04
decor.com today let's talk about
0:06
interior design mistakes that regular
0:10
people just don't care about without
0:12
fail every year at least three or four
0:15
times a year I get flooded with posts
0:18
and YouTube videos and things in my
0:22
Pinterest feed about interior design
0:24
mistakes
0:25
now this is something that I just have a
0:28
really hard time with because interior
0:30
design and interior decorating
0:32
especially is very subjective and there
0:36
are some things that always land on
0:38
these lists that regular people just
0:40
don't care about interior designers
0:43
study the art and science behind
0:46
interior spaces all about the way that
0:49
we behave in spaces spatial
0:51
relationships and a part of their job
0:53
does include assigning the decorations
0:56
to those spaces to a room or a building
0:58
the interior decorating or the interior
1:01
styling this is the part that I have an
1:06
issue with when people critique others
1:09
interior decorating or interior styling
1:12
choices there are no mistakes here it's
1:15
completely subjective it's 100 a matter
1:18
of opinion and yet I constantly see
1:21
things falling on a list of mistakes as
1:24
if people are doing something wrong in
1:26
their homes so let's talk about some of
1:28
those mistakes and why most people
1:31
outside of the Interior Design Niche or
1:36
interior design industry don't care
1:38
about these things at all
1:40
number one is your curtain length now
1:44
this is one that has always been a pet
1:47
peeve of mine yes there are different
1:49
ways to hang your curtains or different
1:51
lengths to have your curtains at so you
1:54
can have them kiss the floor you can
1:56
have them puddle on the floor the
1:58
suggestion is that your curtain should
2:00
go all the way to the floor
2:03
now
2:04
I have never once gone into someone's
2:07
home and said oh man look at the
2:09
curtains
2:11
like look at those curtains they're six
2:13
inches off the ground that's crazy you
2:15
know no one does that regular people
2:17
don't do that it's not a point of
2:21
criticism for anyone I don't know anyone
2:24
and I hope you don't either that will go
2:28
into someone's home and turn their nose
2:30
up at how long someone's curtains are
2:33
it's completely absurd just because my
2:37
curtains are four inches off the ground
2:38
or six inches off the ground does not
2:41
make it a mistake moreover it's
2:44
practical not to have your curtains go
2:47
all the way to the ground if you vacuum
2:49
your regularly or you have a robot
2:52
vacuum or you have pets or things like
2:55
that you don't want those things so
2:57
close to the ground they're going to get
2:58
damaged they're going to get sucked up
3:00
by the vacuum and they're gonna get
3:01
dirty now there is something to be said
3:04
for elongating the look of your windows
3:07
but it's not a must-have if you want a a
3:11
more dramatic look that's a tactic that
3:14
you go for you hang your curtains really
3:16
high up close to the ceiling have them
3:19
run all the way to the floor and skim
3:22
the floor and you have the illusion of
3:25
these big tall Grand windows but not
3:28
everyone needs to do that some people
3:30
already have really tall windows and so
3:33
the idea that you have to have your
3:36
curtains all the way down to the floor
3:38
is just silly and you really should pay
3:41
any mind to it and you certainly
3:42
shouldn't spend any money redoing every
3:45
curtain panel in your home just to
3:48
adhere to some interior designer's wish
3:51
list number two is matching furniture
3:54
sets these are the kinds of sets that
3:57
you would get at showroom warehouses
3:59
like Rooms To Go
4:00
now there is something to be said for
4:04
your house looking like it comes from a
4:08
showroom right that's where we get that
4:10
idea is that everything is matching it's
4:13
just so and it looks like you picked it
4:15
right from a catalog and put it into
4:16
your living room
4:18
there's nothing wrong with this there
4:20
really isn't
4:21
frankly the most affordable way for you
4:25
to buy a full set of furniture if you
4:27
have none already is to buy the sets you
4:31
get a discount when you buy the set so
4:34
don't feel as though you can't buy a set
4:37
of furniture if you want to break up
4:41
that kind of look and you still want a
4:43
nice curated feeling to each of your
4:45
rooms go ahead and break up the pieces
4:48
so if you buy a living room set that has
4:50
a sofa and a matching love seat and a
4:53
couple of chairs pull one of those
4:56
chairs out of there swap it out and put
4:58
it in a bedroom put another chair in a
5:01
home office and then get two other
5:04
chairs to kind of mix and match and
5:06
balance out all of that kind of same
5:08
similar pattern that you're going to get
5:11
when you buy the full set that's the way
5:13
you want to do it so that you're still
5:14
saving money you're getting the pieces
5:16
of furniture that you need for you to
5:18
fill out your rooms but you're not
5:20
getting that sort of
5:22
cold catalog kind of feeling in your
5:26
space and you can do the exact same
5:28
thing for the bedroom sets as well you
5:31
know they sell the bedroom sets us like
5:33
five or six pieces you get the
5:35
nightstand you but the bed frame the
5:37
tall boy dresser a smaller dresser you
5:40
know go ahead and buy it just split up
5:43
the pieces and put some in one room put
5:46
some in another bedroom and then you can
5:48
kind of start from there but by all
5:50
means save the money and buy the set not
5:53
only is it cheaper but it saves a whole
5:55
lot of time if you are fresh in a space
5:58
and you don't have any furniture and you
6:01
really want to be able to function in
6:02
your space you want to lay down on a bed
6:04
you don't want to lay on an air mattress
6:05
you want to sit on a sofa you don't want
6:08
to be on the floor you know go ahead and
6:11
do it it's a lot faster than
6:13
individually picking pieces from a bunch
6:16
of different stores
6:18
number three is curtain rod hanging
6:20
height you do not need to hang your
6:23
curtain rods all the way to the ceiling
6:26
that is the recommendation that I hear
6:28
all the time hang them as high as you
6:31
can it's completely unnecessary the only
6:35
thing you have to do is hang them high
6:38
enough so that you're not drilling into
6:40
your window frame so you hang them high
6:43
over the framing of your window and wide
6:45
enough to be outside of the framing of
6:47
your window that's the only thing you
6:49
need to do
6:50
other than that hang them at any height
6:52
you want it's practical for you to hang
6:55
them just above the window because
6:58
that's where people can reach otherwise
6:59
if you have very tall Windows you're
7:01
probably going to have to hire somebody
7:03
with the big ladder to come in and hang
7:06
the curtains for you and that's just not
7:07
practical for most of us and that's why
7:09
most people don't care about curtain rod
7:12
hanging height
7:14
and number four on my list of mistakes
7:17
that regular people just don't care
7:20
about is tourist art this is something
7:24
that I've seen a number of times and
7:26
what they're talking about is when you
7:29
buy canvas wall art or any kind of wall
7:31
print of a touristy destination like the
7:36
Eiffel Tower Machu Picchu things like
7:39
that and it's not a photograph that
7:42
you've taken or that you're in it's just
7:44
a random print of that structure or of
7:48
that landscape
7:50
as if there's something wrong with it
7:52
there's nothing wrong with that if you
7:55
love this beautiful black and white
7:56
portrait of the Eiffel Tower put it in
7:59
your living room there's nothing wrong
8:01
with that it's such a a weird thing to
8:05
say is a mistake art is completely
8:07
subjective if you love something and you
8:10
love the way it looks in your space and
8:12
you like the way it makes you feel
8:13
there's nothing wrong with that there's
8:15
no mistake there
8:17
now that we've gotten the mistakes out
8:20
of the way there is some sound advice
8:23
that I often see on these lists and they
8:26
all have to do with spatial Relations
8:28
number one is to measure before you buy
8:31
measuring before you buy is going to
8:35
save you the headache of having to
8:38
return something that is either too big
8:41
or too small and a lot of the times you
8:44
are not going to know that until you get
8:46
it in your house worse what if you can't
8:48
get it in your house at all what if you
8:51
did not measure the width of that sofa
8:53
and the guys come to deliver it and they
8:55
can't get it in your door
8:57
or you get home and you realize this
9:02
sofa barely takes up half of the wall
9:05
that you want to put it on and it looks
9:08
teeny tiny in your huge great room you
9:11
don't want that to happen so for sure
9:13
measure everything twice before you buy
9:17
furniture for your room and before you
9:20
buy artwork for your walls number two is
9:24
area rugs area rugs are one of the most
9:27
important and impactful design elements
9:31
that you can purchase for your home in
9:33
my opinion
9:35
an area rug will help Define a space a
9:39
space that you want to function in a
9:41
certain way and you especially need this
9:44
when you have continuous flooring so if
9:48
all of your downstairs is tile from your
9:51
kitchen to your breakfast area to your
9:54
living room there's no signaling of
9:58
where one space stops and another begins
10:01
and you can do that by adding an area
10:04
rug particularly under your dining area
10:08
and under your living room seating area
10:12
normally you would have a change in
10:14
flooring that's usually the the common
10:16
practice is to have a change in your
10:19
flooring to indicate a new space
10:22
but not all of us have that some you
10:24
might have Hardwoods throughout or like
10:27
I said tile throughout and so then it
10:29
becomes really important to help
10:31
delineate the spaces using an area rug
10:35
will help you
10:37
break up those spaces and identify zones
10:41
within a large continuous flooring
10:43
situation and then you can pull your
10:46
furniture around it and really create an
10:48
enclosed space within a space basically
10:51
next is Furniture lining the room this
10:55
means when you have your furniture
10:57
pushed all the way back up against the
10:59
walls and you have your coffee table
11:01
kind of out in the center of your area
11:04
rug just kind of floating in the center
11:06
of your room but your furniture is
11:08
pushed really far away now
11:10
sometimes you can't help that if your
11:12
room is smaller you can you wouldn't
11:15
push your sofa towards the middle of the
11:17
room if you're trying to maximize the
11:18
amount of space in a room right it's
11:20
just impractical you're a sofa or your
11:23
chairs would be up against the wall this
11:25
is really a recommendation for someone
11:27
that has one of these oversized great
11:30
room kind of situations where you need
11:33
to create your own space within a space
11:36
and anchor your furniture towards the
11:38
center so that your furniture isn't one
11:41
floating out there and looking odd but
11:45
moreover making it comfortable for
11:46
people to be able to have a conversation
11:48
you don't want your sofa and chair and
11:51
loveseat to be so far apart that you
11:54
have to yell to the next person so if
11:57
you have these big giant open spaces you
12:01
want to pull your furniture in to your
12:03
area rug so that you kind of cozy up
12:06
that zone make it a little bit smaller
12:08
and make it so that it's understood that
12:12
these few pieces of furniture are meant
12:14
to be in this area and this is where
12:17
we're to hold a conversation play games
12:20
do whatever it is in that space
12:23
so yes I think that lining your walls
12:27
with furniture is definitely something
12:28
that you want to avoid if you can
12:30
however if you don't have the space you
12:32
don't have the space and that's fine
12:33
next is lighting lighting really does
12:37
make a huge difference a two dimly lit
12:41
kitchen or a two brightly lit bedroom is
12:44
really kind of a nuisance you want to
12:48
have
12:48
not only appropriate lighting for the
12:50
tasks that are happening in that space
12:52
but you also ideally would like to have
12:55
lighting at different levels so you
12:57
would have your overhead lighting you
13:00
may have some eye level kind of task
13:02
lighting and possibly some lower
13:05
lighting like under the cabinet lighting
13:07
and things like that those things really
13:10
help set the mood and make your space a
13:13
little bit more flexible so as you move
13:16
from the daytime to the evening in your
13:19
kitchen you may not need all of your big
13:21
bright Island lights and overhead lights
13:23
you may just want to kind of tone it
13:26
down have some little under the cabinet
13:29
but it doesn't have to be at this like
13:30
full bright setting the same thing for
13:33
the living room right you don't need to
13:36
have your overhead chandelier going you
13:39
can have just your floor lamps on the
13:41
sides of your sofa or maybe some little
13:44
table lamps that you have on a sofa
13:46
table or console table again the bedroom
13:50
you could have Wall sconces you could
13:51
have table lamps you don't have to have
13:54
that big bright overhead light so
13:57
consider your lighting and having
13:59
supplemental lighting so that you can
14:01
kind of tone that mood down when you
14:03
want and it just really create a a nice
14:06
space and a relaxing space to be in the
14:10
last is your wall art hanging height
14:13
there is an ideal height for people to
14:16
be able to enjoy the artwork on your
14:18
walls you don't want to be straining
14:21
your neck up or you don't want to be
14:22
looking down at anything either you want
14:25
it to be right there at eye level when
14:27
people are standing you want that center
14:30
point of your artwork to be at eye level
14:32
so that people can really take in the
14:35
whole piece without having to do a whole
14:38
lot of extra work it's just looks nice
14:41
it's a suggestion it's not a must-have
14:43
it's not a mistake but I do think that
14:47
it makes a difference and I agree when I
14:49
see these on a list that's it for this
14:51
video I hope you found it helpful let me
14:54
know in the comments below if you agree
14:56
with these things just not being
14:59
mistakes and being able to kind of do
15:01
your own thing or if you disagree and
15:04
you think that it's really important to
15:07
adhere to some of these industry
15:08
standards I'd love to hear your opinion
