0:02
hi it's Lindsay Diane from
0:04
dianecor.com in this video I'm going to
0:06
share with you an easy DIY mirror frame
0:09
project if you have a plain builder
0:12
grade mirror in your bathroom that has
0:14
no frame on it and it you just want to
0:18
style it up a little bit this is an easy
0:20
way to go you can do it yourself it's
0:23
only going to take you less than an hour
0:26
to do and it's going to look fantastic
0:29
here's a look at my mirror before and
0:31
after this project costs less than $30
0:35
so let's get into it and I will share
0:37
with you how I made this DIY mirror
0:39
frame so here are the supplies that
0:41
you'll need for this project everything
0:43
here I purchased from Home Depot first
0:46
you're going to need some molding i
0:48
chose the triminity molding it's a
0:52
polystyrene mahogany casing molding
0:55
they're selling it in a 96 inch piece
0:59
it's about two and a quarters inches
1:01
wide i also purchased the Gorilla brand
1:07
tough and clear mounting anti-slip
1:09
double-sided tape this is a permanent
1:12
mounting tape i also purchased a Stanley
1:15
miter box with a saw included of course
1:18
you'll also need a tape measure i
1:20
already had that on hand but you can
1:22
always grab a tape measure at Dollar
1:23
Tree or wherever you'd like to buy one
1:26
starting this project is very very
1:28
simple you're going to take some
1:29
measurements of your mirror measure
1:32
twice cut once always so make sure you
1:35
have accurate measurements of the length
1:37
of your mirror and the width of your
1:39
mirror now when I am cutting the ends of
1:44
my molding I want them at a 45° angle
1:48
this is why I purchased the miter box
1:50
now if you have some other fancy tools I
1:54
do not have them if you already have
1:56
like a table saw or a jigsaw or a
1:59
articulating saw these would be much
2:02
easier to cut but I didn't have any of
2:05
those things and so I got the manual
2:08
hand saw with the miter box it took a
2:11
little bit of doing to get these cut
2:13
through but I was able to do it it was
2:16
not the easiest thing in the world the
2:18
box kept sliding around it was really
2:20
cheap but it's one of those things that
2:22
I just needed it for this project and it
2:24
was inexpensive and it did the job but
2:26
if you have better tools use them
2:28
because you'll get done even faster but
2:31
the the most important part is to make
2:33
sure that you measure your length
2:35
correctly and you cut your 45° correctly
2:39
because you want these to kind of
2:41
seamlessly go together at a really
2:44
beautiful angle you don't necessarily
2:45
want a blunt 90° angle although you
2:48
could do that i've seen other people do
2:49
that but because of the type of molding
2:52
that I chose that was already tapered it
2:54
looked better to have them coming in at
2:56
a 45° angle so use the the slots are
3:00
already there on the miter box to help
3:03
direct you and let you cut them
3:05
perfectly all you have to do is kind of
3:06
line it up what I would recommend is
3:09
that you cut two of identical pieces one
3:12
after another so you don't get turned
3:14
so for the mirror your 45° angles are
3:19
going to be the same for the top and the
3:21
bottom and then for each side they're
3:23
going to be the same now I will tell you
3:27
what I made a mistake on was not paying
3:30
attention to the direction of my molding
3:34
because my molding tapered down it had
3:36
sort of like a high side and then it had
3:38
a low side and when I first cut the
3:41
second piece I had flipped my molding
3:45
around wrong inside the miter box and so
3:48
it didn't line up right it wasn't all
3:51
cascading in like it should have been it
3:53
was like high side low side and high
3:56
side low side and it just didn't it
3:58
didn't work out and because of that I
4:00
actually had to go back and get another
4:02
piece of molding so be very careful if
4:06
you have molding that tapers in pay
4:09
attention to where your high side of the
4:11
molding is and make sure that it's lined
4:12
up properly after I corrected that issue
4:15
as I went I just simply laid out the
4:18
frame on my floor to make sure that
4:21
everything was lining up properly now
4:23
once your cuts are done and your mirror
4:26
frame is laid out on the floor and
4:28
everything looks good the hard part is
4:30
done all you have to do now is stick
4:32
some of the double-sided tape on the
4:35
back of each of those panels now you
4:37
don't have to run it all the way along
4:39
the back i just cut short strips and put
4:41
it sort of intermittently along the back
4:43
of each of them and then I went to the
4:45
mirror the first piece that I installed
4:48
was the bottom so I lined up the bottom
4:50
i made sure everything looked good i
4:52
peeled the backing off of the double
4:54
stick tape and I pressed it right up
4:56
against the mirror and then I went in
4:59
and repeated the same process for each
5:01
of the sides of the mirror and then
5:03
finally I came in with the top piece and
5:06
put that in there now you'll see in the
5:09
video that I found that there was a
5:11
little scratch on the molding and
5:14
essentially it was whatever paint or
5:16
finish that they used on top of this
5:18
plastic I had accidentally scuffed away
5:21
now luckily I did have some like wood
5:25
restore um polish from another project
5:28
and I was able to sort of dab it on
5:30
there to help disguise that but
5:32
definitely be careful um with this it
5:35
does scratch a little bit i haven't had
5:38
any issues with it since we've had this
5:41
mirror mounted for months now and you
5:44
know the kids use that bathroom all the
5:45
time i'm not seeing any new scratches or
5:48
new issues with it so once I was able to
5:50
sort of disguise that little blemish I
5:53
think it looked fine it was also one of
5:55
those things where I was probably the
5:57
only one that was ever going to notice
5:58
that it was there but still it was
6:00
bothering me so I did kind of touch it
6:02
up of course they have those little like
6:04
wood pen sticks that you can touch up
6:06
with but again this isn't necessarily
6:08
wood so you probably could have used any
6:09
kind of paint but because I had that
6:11
finish in that deeper wood tone it
6:14
worked just fine but that was it that's
6:17
all you really need to do to put up this
6:19
DIY mirror frame you're going to make
6:21
sure that you get your miter box and
6:23
your saw you're going to cut your ends
6:25
at 45° and make sure everything lays in
6:28
perfectly you'll use the double-sided
6:30
tape on the back and that's it you just
6:32
mount your bottom your sides and then
6:35
your top and that's it you're good to go
6:37
now if you do not want to have to cut
6:40
molding and you think it's a little bit
6:42
too labor intensive it gave me a little
6:44
bit of a sweat i I won't lie i did have
6:47
to put some muscle work into cutting
6:49
those boards because like I said it's a
6:51
plastic that's compressed down really
6:53
good so it was a little bit hard to cut
6:55
through those frankly I think it was
6:57
probably harder to cut through that than
6:58
it would have been to cut through wood
7:00
but either way it worked itself out but
7:03
if you do not want to have to make any
7:05
sorts of cuts like that they do sell a
7:09
trim tape and you've probably seen it on
7:12
like Tik Tok or on YouTube shorts this
7:14
was the first thing that I experimented
7:16
with so none of my mirrors in my
7:19
bathrooms came with frames when we
7:21
bought the house and so I have been
7:23
looking for a way to start to add some
7:26
frames to these mirrors because they
7:27
really do make a huge difference and now
7:31
the mirrors that I had in my master
7:34
bathroom they were starting to get that
7:36
sort of like black along the sides and
7:39
that is because basically the backing of
7:42
the mirror is starting to kind of melt
7:44
away and that's due to humidity usually
7:46
the shower will do that over time
7:49
moisture gets behind in between the
7:51
mirror and the wall and then you start
7:53
to see that black it almost makes you
7:54
think like it's mildew or something like
7:56
that but it's actually the backing of
7:58
that mirror kind of melting away and so
8:01
I really wanted to hide that i was
8:03
starting to see that along the edges of
8:06
our mirrors and it looked junky to me
8:08
and I I really wanted to hide it and so
8:10
the first thing that I did was I said
8:11
"I'm going to try out this tape." Now
8:13
the tape worked beautifully i did the
8:16
same thing i cut at 45° but I used
8:19
scissors because it's just a little
8:21
piece of tape with a little wax backing
8:24
to it i was able to mount it very easily
8:28
again this has been up even longer this
8:31
is This tape has been out probably now
8:33
for about 9 months or so maybe coming on
8:38
close to a year and I have not had any
8:40
trouble with it starting to peel up or
8:42
anything like that what I will say about
8:47
that the the wood grain on it looks so
8:50
realistic that it's almost disorienting
8:53
when you're looking at this mirror and
8:55
it doesn't have any depth to it it's a
8:58
weird feeling it makes you feel like a
9:00
little bit like you're in a fun house it
9:02
photographs beautifully but in person I
9:05
find it to be a little bit awkward
9:07
because you want to touch it you're
9:09
expecting that it has some sort of
9:11
three-dimensional depth to it and it
9:13
doesn't um and so because of that I find
9:17
that it it it gives me an uh I don't
9:19
know it just gives me a weird feeling
9:21
when I look at it it's just like
9:22
something's off here and I can't quite
9:25
pinpoint it except I do know exactly
9:26
what it is um so I don't think that
9:29
that's something that I want longterm
9:31
and that's why I decided to experiment
9:34
with the molding option for the guest
9:37
bathroom and I really do love it and so
9:39
I'm going to go back and I'm probably
9:41
going to end up removing the tape trim
9:45
and replacing it with the same trim that
9:47
I did for this project but it is an
9:50
alternative option it does I think look
9:52
really good and it does hold up long
9:55
term if you are interested in that tape
9:57
option I will link it in the description
9:59
box below i purchased mine from Walmart
10:03
um it was an easy solution it's
10:06
inexpensive but I find that this method
10:09
with the wall molding was also very
10:13
simple and I think it looks a thousand
10:15
times better that's it for this video i
10:17
will leave links in the description box
10:19
below to all of the supplies I used to
10:22
for this project as well as the
10:25
alternative uh trim tape option if
10:28
you're interested in that and thank you
