5 Simple Christmas Decorating Ideas
Sometimes we just need simple Christmas decorating ideas. Whether you don’t have the emotional bandwidth to handle sorting through decorations, have physical limitations, and just can’t make it work in your budget to go all out, there are some years we need to keep it simple and easy.
If that sounds familiar, this is the post for you.
5 Simple Christmas Decorating Ideas
Here are 5 simple, budget-friendly, stress-free Christmas decorating ideas.
1. Wreath and Doormat
Putting up a wreath and setting out a doormat is the perfect way to decorate the outside of your home. You don’t have to string a thousand lights or put giant reindeer on the lawn to get that festive look.
A Christmas-themed wreath and doormat are the perfect welcome home for the season that you and your guests can enjoy.
If you don’t have a wreath you can find a nice one inexpensively on Amazon or At Home. There are a lot of nice options in the $30 and under range.
Or, you can DIY a wreath for $6 or $7 using supplies from Dollar Tree.
Similarly, you can find affordable holiday-themed doormats at Walmart, Dollar General, Five Below, and Aldi.
This is a simple, inexpensive way to decorate your entryway for Christmas.
2. Pillows and Blankets
Christmas or winter theme throw blankets and decorative pillows are the perfect way to add a bit of coziness to your space during the holiday season. Whether you like to drape a snowflake-printed fleece blanket over the corner of your sofa or add a few Christmas-themed decorative pillows to your bed, don’t skip this step.
These are spaces in your home you interact with on a daily basis. So make your living room cozy and inviting as well as your bedroom by adding a few simple throw blankets and pillows.
You can find Christmas-themed throw blankets everywhere this time of year. They’re usually bundled up with a ribbon because they make great gifts. Check out Walmart or Five Below to snag a nice throw blanket for under $10 that you can use to decorate.
3. Kitchen Towels
Next up is kitchen towels. Add a festive feeling to your kitchen by laying out a few Christmas-themed kitchen towels. Whether you like to drape them over your sink or over the handle of your oven or dishwasher, having these out on display is an easy way to decorate your kitchen.
The kitchen is a high-traffic area, especially during the holiday season. So add a little decoration to it that you can experience each day by getting a few themed kitchen towels or even a set of themed oven mitts and pot holders as well.
This is another really inexpensive way to decorate for the holiday if you don’t have them already. Walmart sells a set of four with two pot holders, an oven mitt, and a dishtowel for around $6.
4. Decorative Centerpiece
Instead of pulling out all of the tabletop decor, focus on creating a single centerpiece or vignette to place in a high-traffic area. This can be your kitchen countertop, an entryway table, your coffee table, or even your dining room table. The idea is to add a nice decoration to an area of your home that you’re going to see frequently.
You can use a tray and set out a few of your favorite tabletop decor items. Or, put out something that’s special to you that you look forward to seeing every year like a Christmas village display or your snow globe collection. If it lights up is all the better.
The idea is to create a special moment that’s going to make your smile every time you pass it.
You don’t need to have a display on your kitchen table, and your dining room table, and your coffee table, and the bathroom counter, and in your entryway. You don’t need all that to have a festive look in your home. Just choose one high-traffic area and create a display you love to look at.
5. Christmas Tree (Just the lights)
If you absolutely cannot or will not bring out the big tree, then go with a small 2-foot countertop tree like the ones they sell at Dollar Tree. Decorate it with a small string of lights and a few of your favorite ornaments and put it in another high-traffic area of your home or your bedroom.
But, if you’re like me and just can’t bear the idea of not putting up a tree on Christmas, then do the tree with just the lights. Don’t break out all the boxes of ornaments and picks and garland. Instead, decorate your tree with plain lights.
I like to use two different size bulbs to create a more dynamic look for my all-white lights. But if you prefer colorful flashing lights, go for it.
There’s something about the soft glow of the Christmas tree in the evening that makes everything feel warm and cozy.
If you have younger kids who really love the ornaments, grab them one of those mini 2-foot trees for $1.25 from Dollar Tree and let them set up their own tree in their bedroom or playroom. This way everyone wins.
This is one of those simple Christmas decorating ideas that anyone can do.
