Adding decorative baskets to your rooms is one of the easiest ways to style your home.  They add texture, help reinforce your home decor style, and are great at hiding clutter.

However, they can be very expensive if you don’t know what to look for when shopping for decorative baskets.

Lots of people shy away from them because they see price tags of $140 and upwards for a simple set of 2 or 3 baskets.

But, never fear, in this post, I’ll share some tips for how to select affordable baskets that are stylish and will last you for years to come.  I’ll also share some of my top picks under $50.

Tips For Selecting Decorative Baskets

1. Check the Size

When shopping for baskets online you absolutely, positively, have to double-check the size before you buy.

The easy way to check this is to look at the type of items that have been placed inside the basket in the product image.

Are they showing a blanket, a single pillow, a small plant, or a few pencils?  This will help give you a better idea of how you’ll be able to use the item.

Follow up this visual check by reviewing the dimensions listed for the basket.

2. Fabric vs. Woven vs. Plastic

By far, the most affordable types of decorative baskets are made from plastic.

They’re available in a ton of different colors, styles, and often come with a faux weave texture.  You can find them everywhere from dollar stores to Target and Ikea.

Fabric baskets and fabric lined baskets are also easy to find and cheaper than those that are natural and woven.  You’re also likely to find a larger variety of colors and patterns with fabric baskets.

While both of the aforementioned options are cheaper than natural woven baskets, that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on these.

Most of my picks in the section below are woven and they’re all at a great price point.

If you’re shopping specifically for natural woven baskets look for words like rattan, seagrass, or hyacinth in the title or description.

3. Sets vs. Singles

Baskets are either sold as singles or sets.  Sets are usually in quantities of 2 or 3, although you can find sets of 4 or 5 as well.  They’re just less common.

While it may seem like a no brainer to buy a set of baskets vs. paying for them individually, there are a few things to consider before making this decision.

In my home, I use baskets primarily to organize my shelves.  And for this, I like to have uniformly sized baskets.  Unfortunately, you will almost never find sets of uniform size.

Instead, you’ll see them in a small, medium, and large.

Or they may be termed nesting baskets, meaning they’re intended to be nested one inside of the other when not in use.  This means each one is slightly smaller than the next.

Nesting baskets aren’t the best option for pantry and closet organization.  However, they are great clustered next to a fireplace, entryway, or as a tabletop display.

So, think about how you intend to use the baskets before you purchase a set.  You may need to buy them individually in order to achieve the look you want.

20 Decorative Baskets Under $50

1. MoDRN Naturals Floppy Seagrass Basket with Leather Handles, Square, Set of 2

This set of square seagrass baskets with leather handles is a great all-year-round choice.  They’re a decent size for storing small throw blankets of a few small decorative pillows.

2. MoDRN Naturals Water Hyacinth Herringbone Boat Basket with Leather Handles, Set of 2

MoDRN has a good selection of natural woven baskets, but the hyacinth style is by far my favorite.

This set is really lovely with its boat-like silhouette and herringbone weave.  If you’re looking for something unique, this is it.

3. MoDRN Naturals Water Hyacinth Herringbone Rectangular Basket with Leather Handles, Set of 2

Similar to the previous set of baskets, the hyacinth herringbone pattern is seen in this set of woven baskets from MoDRN as well.

The only difference between the two is the overall shape.  This set maintains a standard rectangular shape while the other dipped in at the sides to create the boat shape.

Either set is gorgeous, in my opinion.

4. MoDRN Naturals Floppy Seagrass Basket with Leather Handles, Round Tapered, Set of 2

If you prefer baskets with a thinner, tighter weave, consider something like this seagrass basket set.

They taper in slightly at the base, have handles, and have a tight weave which in general, is better for storing heavier items.

5. MoDRN Naturals Water Hyacinth Fringe Basket

Pom poms, tassels, and fringe are very popular right now.  If you’re into that Boho vibe, look for baskets like the one below with a little extra embellishment.

6. Decorative Leather Basket 14.75″ x 15″ Brown – Threshold™ designed with Studio McGee

An all-leather basket is a rare find. This one from Threshold and Studio McGee screams country chic.  I just love it.

There is no doubt in my mind that this will sell out quickly.  It will be available for shipping from Target’s website on 10/18.

7. Decorative Square Storage Box with Cut Off Handles 16″ x 16″ Brown

I really like this basket/storage box because of its vase-like shape.   The leather-wrapped handle cutouts are also a nice detail.  This is a great find.

8. Decorative Cane Pattern 8 Sided Open Weave Basket Natural

This open weave basket is perfect if you want to infuse chunky texture into your space.   It’s described as 8 sided, but it’s pretty much circular.

A small plant or a few large kitchen utensils would look great tucked into this and placed on a shelf.

9. Soft Rug Basket With Detail White – Opalhouse™

For use in damp spaces, you’re better off going with a fabric or plastic basket.

Because moisture can be absorbed by their natural counterparts, fabric baskets like the one below are preferred for bathrooms.

10. Round Basket in Braided Matgrass & Black Coiled Rope – Threshold™

A combination of weave basket is a great way to make a statement.  It will help give your space an artisan feel.

This basket below is a braided matgrass and coiled rope combo.  The two-toned look makes this decorative accent stand out even more.

11. Soft Rug Basket w/ Detail Gray – Opalhouse™

Here’s another fabric basket option.  The treaded details on this one are really lovely.

If you an all-white color scheme in your bathroom, incorporating gray is another neutral tone in your space is always a good idea.

12. 20″ x 13.3″ Decorative Braided Tall Basket White – Threshold™

These whitewashed braided baskets are really popular right now.

Because of the narrow opening on this basket, it’s best suited for greenery and faux floral stems as opposed to pillows and blankets.

13. Tall Striped Basket Black/Natural – Threshold™

Opting for a striped basket, especially a black one, will help you draw attention to whatever is inside.  The details on this one are really nice.

I especially like the wrapped/coiled effect on the handles.

This basket is only $29.99!  That’s a great price for something this tall.

If you like this style but are looking for something that’s wider rather than taller, they have the same style in a shorter, more rectangular version for $19.99 available as well.

14. Collapsible Wicker Basket

This Collapsible Wicker Basket from Kelly Clarkson Home is gorgeous.  There are a lot of great style elements at play here.

The two-toned weave, the tassels, and that trendy urn shape come together to make a beautiful home accent.

15. Tapered Decorative Wicker Basket

As we see in some of the other picks from this list, adding splashes of black to woven baskets is really popular right now.

This tapered design is really lovely and certainly more black than brown.  What’s really interesting about this piece is the way they’ve splashed the brown into a zebra-like pattern throughout the front of the basket.

And, on the inside, you’ll see a little extra attention to detail has been paid to the linear framing inside.  The fact that they’ve chosen to accent this with a brown wicker is great because it gives this basket the chance to stand alone without holding any items and still look great.

16. 3 Piece Round Rattan Basket Set

Although this round rattan set is displayed on the floor, baskets like this are best used on countertops or as shelf decor.

They’re really pretty with their broad weave and black handles.  If you have pops of matte black running throughout your home, these baskets would be a great addition to help you create a cohesive design.

17. Nested 3 Piece Fabric Basket Set

This nested trio from Wayfair is unique in that there are a large basket and two smaller baskets of the same size included in this set.

This makes them good for shelf styling and holding small items in a bathroom or home office.

I also really like the fact that the smaller baskets have no handles, just a slightly curved rim that creates a lovely silhouette.

18. Fabric Basket

Another fabric option is this medium-sized two-toned basket available at Wayfair.  It’s currently on sale for only $27.99!  That’s a great deal for a basket this size.

The neutral cream and brown colors would pair well with a lot of different color schemes as well.

19. Handwoven Striped 5 Piece Rattan Basket Set (Set of 5)

This yellow, black, and brown set is unique for a number of reasons.  Besides the splash of yellow, the set comes with 5 baskets, which is rare.

Not only that, but the designs are complementary to one another, not identical.  This is exactly the type of thing people look for when trying to create the eclectic decor look that’s so trendy right now.

20. Romario Wire Basket

I wanted to include at least one wire basket into this mix.  Frankly, they’re a little hard to find if you’re looking for something that isn’t a rustic or galvanized farmhouse style.

However, I do suspect we’ll be seeing more like the style below in the near future.  With the rising popularity of art deco style decor, we’ll be seeing more angular patterns, black, and gold decor.

This Romario Wire Basket is just the start of what’s to come in the home decor world.
