6 Home Decorating Skills I Learned on Skillshare
Did you know you can take home decorating classes on Skillshare?
There is no shortage of home decorating and interior styling inspiration online. Pinterest, Instagram, home decorating blogs, and YouTube are flooded with users posting amazing pictures and home tours.
But, what we don’t see a lot of are the places to learn the skills needed to create those beautiful rooms?
For some people, this comes naturally. But for others, like myself, I need a bit of a roadmap.
Luckily, after hours and hours of searching for quality, affordable tutorials; I was pleased to find interior decorating courses at Skillshare.com.
What’s is Skillshare?
I’ve known about Skillshare for years, but I never thought they would have courses covering the topic of decorating. I assumed it was all software how-tos and online marketing guides. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of that, but there is so much more.
You can learn DIY projects, how to choose a color palette, how to accessorize your home, how to install a gallery wall, flower arrangements, you name it, they have it.
After viewing as many courses as my brain could handle over the past few months, there are six standout courses that I truly loved. The instructors were easy to listen to, the information was incredible, and the flow and outline of the classes were exactly what I needed.
Best of all, I was able to take all of the classes for free!
So, if you’re looking for a little, or a lot of free decorating and interior design guidance here’s how to get it.
How to Take Home Decorating Classes on Skillshare
The Skillshare platform usually costs $10/mo but you can get access to view all of the classes (18,000+) with a free trial of their premium membership. It’s an amazing offer.
You’ll have 2 full months to get in there and browse through the catalog and take as many courses as you’d like.
Below is a list of the courses I feel are the cream of the crop. They’re super informative and I was able to view them all for free with my initial trial.
Some courses are longer than others. I recommend creating lists and setting due dates in your account to help pace yourself. That way you’ll get the most out of your free access. So, without further adieu, here are my top picks.
Top 6 Home Decorating Classes on Skillshare
Design is in the Details: How to Accessorize Like a Pro
This course is taught by Erikka Fogleman and might be my favorite out of everything I viewed. It is jam-packed with information.
You’ll learn how to style a coffee table, a console, a fireplace mantle, bookshelves, how to mix metals, and more. It’s amazing!
Make sure you pace yourself through this one though. It’s two and a half hours long, but worth every minute.
Table-Top Styling: Style Memorable Tablescapes for Every Season
The instructor for this class is Justina Blakeney with appearances by a few other designers offering info on specialized topics.
In the course, she’ll walk you through color stories, proportions, table settings, and how to create something special for each season.
Styling Interiors for Social Media
If you’re just getting into photographing your own interiors (or others) this is a great class to take. It’s short and to the point.
The instructor Jessica T. brought up a lot of good points that I never considered. Things like how to tell a story and how to prepare to photograph an interior.
How to Use Color Like a Pro
This is another offering from Erikka Fogleman. She runs through all of the basics from the color wheel to color psychology.
If you want to know how to incorporate colors beyond just choosing something for your walls, this is the course for you.
The Art of Styling Your Room: How to Create a Mood Board
A great starting point for styling your room is here. Angela Belt offers an express view of how to move from conception and planning on through the styling phases.
This is an easy 10-minute course to get you into the decorating mindset.
DIY Home Decor: Hang a Gallery Wall 3 Different Ways
Good Housekeeping TV made an exclusive class for Skillshare covering how to properly hang a gallery wall. This is a great course, and it’s easier than you’d think.
Don’t be scared off by the “what you’ll need” section at the beginning. When I first saw the number of items they were suggesting I almost clicked off.
But once I started looking up pricing for the items he mentioned, it didn’t add up to much. It’s just intimidating seeing a list of 15 items to hang a few images on a wall.
Luckily, most of them you probably already have, and any extra items you need to get will only cost a few dollars.
Conclusion
That concludes my round-up of my favorite interior decorating courses on Skillshare. I highly recommend checking them out.
View them all for free with your trial membership by registering here. The catalog is immense and these are just a few that really stood out to me.
